Husband and I are treating brother in law and niece to a trip to UK and Amsterdam in March / April with us. I booked the original flights Mel: LHR: AMS return premium economy back in November.
I made a guess on the LHR : AMS date based on needing to be at a work function and these dates frustratingly have changed.
I called Qantas P1 line today to make the change to the LHR : AMS flights only (on BA) and was told that the change would be $2085 per person simply to change the LHR : AMS return flight dates (main flights between MEL and LHR dont change).
I didn’t get through to Hobart - presumably because it’s a Sunday and I think possibly I was through to Mumbai.
I nearly fell over - I can book a return BA flight for £133 LHR to AMS.
When I asked him why the price has changed so much he said because my destination is AMS and therefore the whole booking changes and the prices I booked at are no longer available. But I only way to change the BA flights not the Qantas ones.
I asked if I could cxl the BA flights and make my final destination London - apparently not and of course it would be considered a no show if I just miss the flight and rebook a BA one.
I have had a quick look on Qantas and the cheapest I could find for the dates is now $14500 - I paid $11876.
Is there a way around this or is it on me? (To stump up over $2k for a $260 flight) and when I call P1 tomorrow is there anything different I should ask?
Huge thanks if anyone can help me on this one.

The airfare will reprice if you change or cancel prior to departure, as you’ve unfortunately found out.

If worst comes to worst, I’d fly to Amsterdam and fly right back again on a separate ticket. As you said, you can get it for £100 (including bags).

Far cheaper than the $$$ they want for the change… but time intensive.

Sadly that would be my brother in law and niece as well and their first time out of Australia, they’d land in London and take off 2.5 hours later - it seems like a real faff, but I’ll see how I go tomorrow and maybe it’s the only option.

Not have an extra night in Amsterdam instead then? Would never give QF that amount of money for a flight change. Robbery!!
