How to get Chairman's Lounge Membership ?

Perhaps you're psychic...a bit of a weird coincidence, but I was just browsing this discussion when my husband called from Hong Kong where he had lunch today with the very person you refer to (the Australian CEO). So no, not there. Would love to be back on the main expat circuit, and HK is always a blast...
I have to be vague 'cause MOTH (man of the house) has a bit of a profile and would be mortified if he knew I was actively courting CL membership on the net...

(And yet, I just can't help myself, I don't like sitting up the back if I can possibly avoid it).

I hope you take this in the gentle ribbing nature in which I intend it, but when you say "if I can possibly avoid it" do you mean "do everything I can to avoid it other than pay for the seat I want to sit in"? Because you know, there is one way to make sure you don't end up sitting "up the back". :)

Hang on, wait a minute! The 2IC of a large multinational? (... Does quick comparison of my measly salary with the likely package of said person ...) Forget good natured ribbing, just buy the d@mn tickets! :D

Mind you, human nature being what it is, I'll bet even Bill Gates likes getting something for nothing occasionally.

Interesting topic...

I had a chat with one of our senior board members who told me he can't get CL membership because our firm already has 12 CLs ( ) and apparently Qantas feels that this is already too many. Interesting to note that some of our CLs are not on our board (but still very senior nevertheless...)

Do other airlines have a similar program?

British Airways has the "Premier" level, akin to Chairmans Lounge, and something which you will not find mentioned on the BA website.

JAL has a similar program though I can't remember the name. Benefits include escorts (no, not that kind  ) to and from the plane and through immigration (if necessary), and if you have checked baggage you'd usually be excorted to the VIP lounge (these are nothing special) to wait while another staff member fetches your stuff. Depending on how important you are dictates how many excorts you get, though this humble person can't see how more than one helps further.

I became a CL member in July last year.
We seemed to have been invited to join after our annual corporate travel spend exceeded about $1m/annum.
Prior to that we were life QANTAS Club members.
With CL at the major Australian airports you have a lounge separate to the usual QANTAS Club lounge, although her on the Gold Coast we don't have one :-(
The main benefit thats very handy is priority upgrades and being able to book on points on only a few hours notice; if there's a cash seat we seem to be able to get it with points; spending lots every month, we accumulate lots of points and therefore use them for corporate travel.
All the BEST!

OK with all this talk about the CL and my chances of getting inside in person being next to zero, has anyone got any photos that they can/want to share with the rest of us non-CL members?

:D

I'd imagine it's a bit PI to be standing there taking photos.

I've got photos of some Japanese equivalent lounges, though I'm sure no-one wants to see my ugly mug (prominent in said photos) .

A friend of ours is a retired judge of the NSW supreme court and he is a CL member. He has done (and still does) a lot of travelling.

I suspect the newly-elected pollies will be given CL memberships. Perhaps likely (some of) those who lost seats (JWH?) may lose theirs?

I think it was Oscar Wilde that said he wouldn"t want to be a member of any club that would have him.

I thought it was Groucho Marx.

I highly doubt a former PM would lose his CL membership. Probably some shorter term backbenchers would.

Our company has two or three, however, I don't think they take it off you. I know this because one of our senior execs is bitter that his predecessor has 'his' CL slot....

I am of course angling for a fourth... as a visitor, I don't think much of the CL lounges, I find them a bit sterile and the only thing they do is separate self-important people from the hoi polloi. I'd probably be a bit more bothered if the new J/plat lounges weren't coming though.

It may depend on your position, but they don't always let you keep it forever.

A colleague's father used to be a CL member, but lost it after he left his position (he wasn't an MP though).

Cheers,
- Febs.

A short term backbencher would not be that likely to have a CL membership iirc

I would agree. But what is a "short-term" backbencher? Maybe the committee approving the recommendations have their own criteria, other than that of the volume of business.
