I would agree. But what is a "short-term" backbencher? Maybe the committee approving the recommendations have their own criteria, other than that of the volume of business.

Istr reading that backbenchers in general would not tend to be given a CL membership and that it tends to be senior members

All Two-Star Officers and SES Band Two public servants in the Defence Department get CL for both themselves and their partners. (One-stars and SES Band One just get complimentary QP for them and their partners).

Gumby,

Welcome to AFF.

How many Two-Star Officers and SES Band Two public servants would there be :?:

Where do you get your information (if that's not to personal) ;)

I can also confirm that all Defence staff at the military Two-Star and SES Band 2 level and above get CL membership as part of their package. I don't have the figures at hand on how many people this is, but it would probably be less than 50 people.

Other departments with significant business with Qantas also receive CL memberships.

Good question. Not sure where SES Band 2 kicks in, but for the military, Major General, Lieutenant General and General are Two-Star. Similarly for the Navy and RAAF equivalent ranks.

As an amusing (to warped minds like mine) aside, Australia's first female two-star was recently promoted - Brigadier Elizabeth Cosson is now Major General Cosson. It is proabably fortunate that she now gets CL since she is best known to the general public as the person who left a CD containing the report she wrote on the bungled Kovko body repatriation in a Canberra QP computer. Check out Australian Government, Department of Defence if interested for some of the senior Defence heirachy.

I suspect it is technically not part of their package. That would infer the ADO is paying for their membership whereas it is documented as QANTAS giving complimentary membership in recognition of their status as VIPs.

I could tell some stories though they aren't appropriate here.

Maybe I should have stayed in the ADF (RAAF) as I know some of these people personally and instructed at least one during his pilot training.

I might have qualified for CL membership.

Dave,

I can actually say with 100% authority that ALL politicians in Australia, regardless of their seniority, automatically obtain CL membership upon election.

I know many of the worms, and one recounted to me that he had barely been in his office for a day that he got a call from someone to invite him to the CL. 8 years later, he is still on the backbench and no one has heard of him, but he enjoys the fruits of the CL!

Well, I can say with 100% authority that's not the case (current as @ Jan, 10, 2008).

BlacKnox, if you work for QF and are in the know, then i yield to you on this.

However, i am yet to come across one MP who isnt a CL. In fact, everything i have seen so far indicates that CL would appear to be universal to even to most obscure politicians - and is always offered within days of taking office

Australians elect politicians at three levels; Federal, State/Territory & Local... I figure not ALL of them get a CL membership. :)

so if you good mates with the State of Federal member they may be able to introduce them to CL???

I have never read anything more distasteful on this forum - yuuuhhh. I think given my past comments here, I'm unlikely to be a staff member.

Arrhhh, if we limit to Federal MPs, well that's mildly interesting/ informative.

Local most certainly don't :!:

im sorry but you are mistaken. my dad has been a chairmans lounge member for as long as i can remember and he was a local politician. he was in local government for many years and has only previously lost that position. im only 16 and i am lucky to have felt the benefits of the chairmans lounge. with his previous job he did travel alot though, which is why im guessing he was given a chairmans lounge membership.

SOME local politicians do get CL membership. if anyone has questions about how he got it, i can ask him and relay that information to you.

<slightly moderated for personal info>

Liam you are opening a can of worms. It is easy to figure out who your father is.He knows a lot of people and is known to be active in many spheres of politics.consider this post well and maybe ask a moderator to delete it.

Welcome to AFF and I look forward to your future contributions. However as drron eludes, your post has far too much information, and allows everyone to work out exactly who you and moreso your father is. I suggest you immediately edit your post to delete delete references to your dad and his position. Likewise you could PM (private message) a moderator to delete the post altogether.

I have delibertely not quoted your whole message.

As Liam indicates he is only 16 years of age, maybe the mods could remove it until they receive confirmation he wants it left as is. Be that as it may, a lot of people would have already read it.

I missed the original post before the moderator edit but I was able to determine the identity of Liam's father even though I do not follow local politics.
