How likely is an upgrade?

Hi, I am new, wondering if it is worth transferring points into our Qantas FF account in the hope of upgrading from economy to business on a flight from Auckland to LA in August. Since we are only bronze members it sounded as though it would be a waste of time trying when I spoke to Qantas, but the girl did insist that it was possible. Any advice? Thanks!

Yes, it is possible, but perhaps not probable. ;) The problem with upgrading via points is that you won't know if the upgrade is confirmed until 5 hours before your flight. Those with higher status (Silver, Gold, Platinium) will be ahead of you on the list. Still, it is possible.

The only way to guarantee a business class seat is to pay for one.

BTW, welcome to AFF! :D

Thanks Yada Yada, We are starting to think about paying for an upgrade for the long flights, might be safer with my husband's long legs. This site is very helpful, I've learnt a lot already!

Welcome to AFF Christine!

Flying to the US can be one of the hardest QF routes to get upgrades. I am sure you have read the other current thread, upgrade question, and you would have noticed that the OP did not get requested upgrade and has changed flights by 1 week in the hope of securing an upgrade.

Now if you were Gold or Platinum it would be a different story.

Good luck if you do try for the upgrade.

i got upgraded MEL - LAX in september last year and then again on the way back in october. i was bronze so i was very surprised that both the upgrades came through so easily - they were both confirmed on the website about 12 hours before the flights. i was surprised given how everybody on this forum says it's so unlikely.

however i'm not having much luck getting upgraded this time around so maybe i was just lucky last time.

Reports indicate that since the May 25 '05 changes, it upgrades on points seem to occur more often. Before then , International upgrades came from Award inventorary.

If this is the case, it's probably due to Qantas Yield managemnt having a more certain understanding of flight loads 24 hours before a flight and being able to make seats available for upgrade.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I requested an upgrade on the midnight flight from PER to MEL.

It got confirmed instantly on the website.

Maybe a different story for international??

Domestic and International upgrades go through a different process.

When it says "there are no upgrades available at this time. Please try again later."

Does that mean there are too many people in the que, or business class is full cos of paying passengers?

It means that there are no seats available in the appropriate fare bucket at the time you requested the upgrade. There may still be seats available to purchase and these may be released for upgrades at a later date.
