How far do you go to keep fit while travelling?

every time we travel be it on a cruise ship or by plane I take this along with me:
PTP Total Resistance Gym - rebel

A pretty full on resistance band setup that can be used in a lot of different ways, Being a Jetts member I am not usually far from a Jetts gym so I can use that.
On a cruise ship I will generally visit the gym once a day and run around the running track if they have one.

Then I kill all of it with plenty of alcohol so I maintain on a cruise haha.

I'll be sure to take one on a cruise next time. I gained 10kg last year on a one month cruise and road trip (sitting and eating all day long) lol

I don't exercise these days apart from walking to and from train stations. :D

It's so easy to put weight in during a cruise. My first cruise I ballooned pretty badly. Then I discovered the resistance bands. Now I can do near on a full gym workout with that kit.

I've got the honeymoon cruise next year so that will be a bit more relaxed with the working out.

We tend to hit the wall at about 3 weeks into a holiday. We no longer want to eat as much nor drink as much. It's kind of self regulating involuntary behaviour. Consequently with the extra walking we do we usually only gain a kilo or so that comes off quickly once back home.

I work O/S and walk for fitness. 10-20km most days (at 8k feet). Having said that, when I'm at home I tend to eat out every day as I don't get to do that otherwise, so the waistline doesn't seem to be reducing much! :(

That is a lot of walking!

That's all day. I tend to do 5-12km after work as exercise and about the same during the course of the day ... or so my fit bit tells me. It's also on the side of a mountain, so the walk is anything but flat. The fit bit tells me I climb the equivalence of anything up to about 300 flights of stairs a day! Some days are considerably less, when I'm feeling slack and lazy but even those days are a minimum of 50-80 flights of stairs. I think Kokoda in a few weeks is still really going to sort me out though!

Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, the Frequent Flyer Concierge team at Frequent Flyer Concierge will help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I bought MrP a fit bit in Dubai in April thinking it was just to replace his cardio monitor at the gym. Bad move as I didn't realize the technology of what I was buying. It was $$ and the latest model but didn't twig. Wears it all the time. Syncs with his messages on the phone. Monitors his sleep. Celebrates his stepping achievements. Tracks his heart rate which changed in just 3 weeks on the holiday (so much stress over that fall!) I created a monster. Weirdest thing is it doesn't accurately measure his cardio at the gym.

My trips are always for leisure, and I do a fair bit of walking. So my main concern is getting a bit of fitness before I leave.

Ahh, but Pushka, it is a real benefit. I never thought it would help me (I bought it to find out some particulars, like those mentioned above) but it does help motivate ... and that statement comes from an extremely un-motivatable person! It tells me the number of hours of uninterrupted sleep I had (which helps me), controls my phone (for the music, I hate phones and it is often on "flight mode" when I'm not "available"), it tells me where I've walked on Google maps, it tells me when I'm about to drop dead of a heart attack (not needed just yet, thankfully) and tells me how high I've climbed (can't remember the last ... space shuttle or something ;)) and how far I've trekked. The biggest PITA about it is the continual recharging of the beast! Seems it's not just athletes that need super fuel for breakfast, but fit bits do as well!

Gawd. Not another one.
(PS being in the Psychology field I can say you are spot on about the value of biofeedback and motivation)

Recharging. Yep. Got a phone call from an interstate MrP asking me to bring the charger over.

OMG!! Had I have known you were in psychology, I would have said zip! I'm feeling analised already!

Exercise is a great way to get over jetlag and keep sane while on work trips - usually go for a jog before going to bed on evening of arrival in an overseas city (sometimes at 11pm!!), and if I have a free morning the next day then hire a bike and cycle in the daylight for a couple of hours. For domestic work trips with hand-luggage only, just bring my runners and shorts/shirt - can usually fit in a jog either before breakfast, or at 5.30pm between end of meetings and dinner.

I will generally stay at hotel with a gym otherwise I am a member of a global gym and have access to hundreds of gyms work wide which in NZ I did every morning for 10 days working out apart from one morning due to an hour and a bit each way to the gym and had a early start that morning anyway.

I jog every day of the week, and it's no different on a holiday. I always exercise first thing in the morning so it's done, and I can enjoy the rest of my day. It certainly helps with all of the extra calories consumed!

Mind if I ask what gym?
I'm always in the lookout for new gyms.

I have done figure skating since I was a child (I think I mentioned this in another fitness-related thread). I take my ice skates with me wherever I travel. I have this bucket list going on, of places and/or particular ice rinks I want to skate at in my lifetime. Have skated in some truly spectacular places. Let's call it fitness and sightseeing all in one

Side note: there was a time when I would always pack my skates in my carry on, but these days, not every country allows that because, well, they're blades after all!

Just read the whole thread through and seen some interesting responses.

Ill hazard and 80% guess that the OP is into Triathlons to be bringing bikes to do the cycling stuff.

If into that Tri stuff, put the bike away and go hard into running (you can do anywhere) and swimming (if your place allows you). Forget bike, do it at home and if really missing out use the hotel gym bikes things.

If into just bike, hire bikes or use the hotel stuff.

My main work employer has just introduced a new policy that we can expense a gym visit per day when we travel if there is no hotel gym / the hotel gym is inadequate. Very happy!

Not bad at all! I have found about 3 "adequate" hotels gyms in recent times.
