Hi Guys,

So I am about to fly on Qantas Economy again where you have to pay for your seats or wait for the 24 hour checkin window. Its almost 24 hours but i was wondering how does the seats allocation work? As previously at times if i try to check in just when its 24 hours or so to go then there doesnt seem to be many seats available and then when i check again much closer to the flight time, more seats seem to become available. Problem is once you start the check in process, you cant back out and come back for more seats allocation, so i am trying to figure out when is it the best time to check for seats / web check in?

OH? Really? I have never been able to. The minute after i have checked in, it never lets me back in to do anything including changing seats, maybe I must have been doing something wrong.

I would definitely try to choose your seat at T-80.
There is even a T-80 app available for iPhone which will calculate the time for you if you put in your flight details.
I don't usually bother checking in until I reach the airport. It serves no purpose.
UNLESS you are travelling HLO and are worried about arriving too late to check in but in time to catch the flight.

A T-80 app? What is that? I thought you have to pay if you try to select your seat before checkin / without checking in? never heard of T-80.

I just tryied and only way i was able to select seats without paying was to check in. But i noticed this time i had a lot of choice of seats unlike all my previous experiences.

At T-80 (80 hours before the flight) the seat map usually opens up and more options become available. However if you're in the position of having to pay for seat selection then I don't believe this will change - it's just that you may have more options to choose from.

I flew back from Queenstown NZ last week and managed to get Exit Row seats free of charge and it was greater than 24 hours out (about 30). They were advertised as $35 each the days leading up.

I apologise for my ignorance. I haven't had bronze or even silver status since the charges for seat selection were introduced and I completely overlooked the fact that you would have to pay if you selected your seat before check in. The T-80 app lets you know when seats down the front of the cabin, which are reserved for high status holders, are released to other passengers. It doesn't get around the payment problem, sadly.

It happened again, on my return flight I used the app and again using the app to check in meant that I didn't get a seat selection choice. And after that I go on my laptop to change seats through the check in process and I am unable to. So it must be something that happens when you check in with the app. When I checked in with the laptop on my departure flight I was able to go back into the checkin process and change my seats. Bah so annoying. This teaches me to never use the Qantas app

What OS app version are you using? I use iOS/iPhone and I’m pretty sure there is the option to view boarding passes/change seats etc (after checkin). Not something I regularly do (usually preselect the best available) but earlier this year I noticed, by chance a better seat (old 747 1st class) become available and nabbed it.

When you use the app to check in it automatically selects a seat for you, but you have the option to view the seat map and change if you want to. Click on "view boarding pass" and then scroll down to see a link to view seat map. The only times that I couldn't change is when all the seats are allocated and/or blocked or check in had closed.

If you check in using the app and then go to use the website to change seats, it will allow you to change seat but it won't stick and changes here are ignored.
