How do you remain clean and sane when travelling in whY long-haul?

London Heathrow has some fairly spacious disabled toilets where you can strip off. I carry a face washer in a plastic, zip-lock sandwich bag which I can use to wash the necessary bits, re-apply deodorant, then clean jocks and socks. Change in to a clean shirt from hand luggage and then TIDY UP the bathroom!
It isn't a shower but it still leaves one feeling fresh.

p.s Re: face washer; always START with your face!!

Last trip to LA I did the exit row seats both ways and it would have to be pretty close to the best money spent on the trip. But I did forget the headphone adaptor for QF so I got stuck with the standard headphones.

Heading to San Francisco on Sunday and this time have the exit row + adapter + new noise cancelling headphones so it should be sweet. I have tested the headphones on the bus to work and the do a great job except for the teenage school girls…

Yeah, that one's a trap for young players.

I always carry a small pack of unscented disposable wet wipes - eg Swisspers. Get them at a pharmac_ or grocery store, in either the baby product aisle (and find one with neutral packaging!) or in the cosmetics aisle (which always seem to cost more).

I have the Bose NCH, do I need a QF adaptor?

I find 1/2 a Zolpidem (stilnox) essential. That usually does me for about 4 hours. Then I have a walk around, toilet stop and chugalug some water and take another 1/2 tab if on a long flt. I find it best to not eat a lot when jammed in Y.

I personally find the alternative drug (Temazepam) better than Stilnox.

Smoother sleep and no reports of hallucination

Usu give me 6 hrs of restful sleep

YMYV, of course (not medical advice)

Always have some spare battery (or bring the charger) for the NCH.

Up there, when it stops.... It really does stop until you get out of the plane

Yes, used to use Temazepan. Then, upon my return I used to always feel 'invisible' for a day or so, and put it down to jetlag. Then I discovered Zolpidem and find half a tab works a treat. But one must be careful w' any drugs as they affect people differently.

As far as I know, Temazepam still requires a prescription, and doctors will only write one for very small quantities. Does the same apply to Zolpidem/Stilnox?

I do a lot of long haul Y travel. What I do is:
  • Use Bose noise cancelling headphones
  • For sleeping, use a QF J eye mask (the Y eye masks arent comfortable and let in too much light)
  • For sleeping, use 65Db earplugs (available form Woolworths)
  • Fresh T-shirt, socks and jocks at each stop (even if it's a four segment trip)
  • Shower at every stop you have time to
  • To sleep on board, the ear plugs, eye mask and three Valarium tablets (also available from Woolworths)
  • As I have lounge access, I typically try to eat in the lounge rather than on board - lounge food is almost always better than aircraft food. Only eat if it fits with the destination timezone - when the FAs bring breaky at 3am, try to ignore it and sleep through the service.

I had a look at this. It seems quite good and only $45. Has anyone used this? What exactly do you get for your money? Should I pre-book?

I've used the Marhaba lounge in DXB twice now. If you check in at Dubai and have them pre-booked they will check you in, escort you through the crew lanes at customs which resembled a zoo, and give you a ride to the lounge on a electric buggy if your willing, or they'll walk with you to the lounge.

I used it during transit in Jan before the QF/EK alliance was tied up to shower. Entry cost was AU$42 with showers an additional $14. At that point, I really didn't care after doing MEL-KUL-DXB with another 6 hours still to go. Food and drink comparable to a Qantas Int'l J lounge I thought with a bit of a local flavour to the dishes. Computers are pre-historic but there is wi-fi included with the passcode given to you arrival. It's a reasonably small lounge (without knowing the terminals very well there, I know I've been in two different ones. The one in the EK terminal is smaller. The other one is in the terminal BA fly from and I used it instead of BA lounge which was jam packed).

My employer provided it the first time, otherwise I wouldn't have known about it but worth a try.

No requirement to pre-book, just pay on arrival and they keep your boarding pass to call for your flight too.

Hope it helps.

You just need the standard double prong adaptor that comes with them. Make sure you change the switch setting (on the plug that sticks into the headphones) to 'Lo' setting when you use them on the plane, as it gets rid of the annoying 'ping' sound if you've left it on 'Hi' (which you use for ipad, tablet, etc).

Thanks for that useful advice.

I'd be a bit worried about the sleepwalking side effect...

If you are referring to Zolpidem/Stilnox I have never had that. But, anyone contemplating taking it would seek medical advice. I started w' exceedingly small dose (maybe just a nibble of a low dose) and had a few practice shots at home.

Not many places to sleep walk off a plane though.

You'll be wanting to watch this Simpsons episode then S18E19 Crook and Ladder | Watch The Simpsons Online Free (Stilnox has a different brand name in the USA - Ambien).
