How do you know if you're a dual citizen or not?

I haven't heard anything from Bill Shorten yet re his UK Citizenship by descent.

Did he formally renounce it or are the media only concerned about the LNP or Greens?

I think its closer to a big party small party thing. So far all of the people who have been caught up in this are from neither the ALP or the Liberal Party. PHON, the Austalian Greens and the Nationals are the parties that have been discovered. Suggesting that the ALP and Libs either have better processes or people to do this for them.

Although perhaps Mr Pynes idea of referring everyone with a foreign sounding name to the high court will discover more.

I wouldn't be surprised if neither Liberal or Labor check for cases where there is multiple generational lineage.

And here's Nick to join the party of potential dual citizenship holders.

Nick Xenophon will let the High Court decide his fate if it is confirmed he is a dual citizen, with the key Senate crossbencher determined to dig in and not resign from the Senate.

Senator Xenophon is urgently seeking clarification from the British Home Office over his citizenship status after questions were raised about his father's nationality.

Could the last person to be thrown out of Parliament due to dual citizenship please turn off the lights.

Just re read my post. It should have read "incumbent upon the commonwealth government " and "they too have a duty of care"

sorry for the poor poor grammar and spell check.

One wonders how how many other countries you would need to check with to so if you're a dual citizen.
IMHO the need for checking these things should inntcat rstbqith the commonwealth Government. Because they toomhave a duty of care when it comes to ensuring all of the "functionaries " are fit and proper people. Let's face it, they do police checks on cleaning staff. So why not the full gamut on politicians ?

Since my grandfather left (what was to become) Poland in 1868 and he has Germanic heritage, I'm limited to the two I already have.....

Happily wandering

Fred

PS Should it be "free" to renounce citizenship (assuming you don't end up "stateless")?

Never thought about the Irish citizenship...

It's a good option given Brixit and EU citizenship. I'm eligible via my grandmother, and if I'd bothered / known to register my birth with the Irish prior to the birth of my kids - they would also be Irish citizens. This link would continue forever as long as one generation registers before the next.

This whole saga has been educational. I thought my Aus / UK citizenship was it .... I've since found out that I'm also Irish and a New Zealander:shock:

And now Nick X. This is truly pathetic. Given our head of state is a British citizen and not an Australian citizen. Wonder what the status is of the GG.

Curious that neither Govt nor opposition want a general enquiry. I wonder how many of the former PM's renounced their British citizenship ;)

I'm a dual citizen, maybe even a tri citizen. I should check because if/when the UK leaves the EU my (possible) third citizenship could come in handy.

I'm not actually sure the Queen is a British citizen? She's a British national, but I don't think that extends to citizenship. Apparently she is potentially an EU citizen however.

Is that because you were born after 1983, or because the link is your grandfather not father?
Cause of link to grandfather. And cause back in the day, mothers didn't pass on their citizenship rights

hmm, this is certainly a can of worms.

My husbands parents were both born in UK. ( Came to Australia as 10 Pound Poms in 1960) He was born soonafter. We are unsure if they have ever had Australian Citizenship.
Would he be considered a British citizen by descent?

Yes I think so. There is now a cut off? Not sure of year that applies to. Or even if it does.

By not looking for it I found my father's old passport. This is the cover of one issued in 1947 for his naval service.

Is he British?

He may have been but I believe this was actually an Australian passport. There is a blue stamp inside which says 'Australian citizen by birth and British subject'.

Well, I know she's Germanic by descent from the Hapsberg (spelling) line. Apparently she also doesn't have a passport.

The Queen was born in Britain to parents born in Britain - no doubting her citizenship! But as you say, the Queen does not issue a passport to herself, and I guess she is well recognised at the border.

This letter was Tony Abbott's proof of renouncing his UK Citizenship in 1993 prior to being elected in 1994.

Don't know why other Senators have a problem providing written proof of renouncing citizenship if indeed they have done so.

Either he's renounced or he hasn't. If he has let's see the evidence.
