Nobody has mentioned SYD-KUL for the JQ int services. I am booked with them to KUL in November. Hoping QF dont cancel this route and also that they have light loads in *class so we can get the cheapie upgrade at check in.

I have a feeling that Sydney - Kuala Lumpur was one of the routes cancelled today as of September 2008.

To answer my own question earlier in the thread it does not appear that JQ has any successful international routes. SYD-SGN is to be replacedwith SYD-DRW-SGN, SYD-KUL to go and then attempt a SYD-OOL-NRT service on top of other cancellations.

If they are failing with these simple routes how is JQ going to make Europe successful?

...and how are they going to get there? via BKK?

I don't know. I thought KUL would have been a really good transit but they appear to be dropping this route.

I think one problem is that JQs pricing is too high, apart from sale periods, and you can get to Europe via BKK, SIN, KUL, ICN, NRT with other full service carriers, including interlining baggage, for not much more than the JQ price. Not knocking them just a general observation of their pricing structure.

??? what else can one really say! JQ MEL-BKK survives and still 5 flights a week to HNL and MEL-DRW-SIN???, I guess they won't dump it one month after introducing it. I reckon there will be more changes in coming months.

Hmmm, I have a lot of travel to KUL coming up over the next 18 months or so and was considering *Class as an option for the extra SC.

Looks like it will be back to transiting through SIN.

I was thinking of doing the same, looks like a rethink.

MEL-NRT is still alive and well 3 x weekly in the schedules, though with flight numbers changed from QF179 to QF119 later this year.

Spoke too soon. :(
Was hoping to use that flight on a future DONE, guess I'll have to hope for a 1 flight number through flight via SYD or reposition myself to/from SYD with a bunch of red edeals...

I too was looking at using this as part of a circle pacific fare to US. Will now look at going through HKG - CX have 3 flights a day. Then it is easy to get to US, perhaps via YVR.

I bought (rare I know) a *class fare DPS - MEL for about AUD850 as the SC's will push me over PG level for this year. I consider this price to be OK but not great.

When I went to select my seats every single seat was available. Whilst I would have bought a departure upgrade this still seems a little silly. Surely people are planning holidays about 4 to 6 months out, I am not traveling in a holiday period which could effect loads.

JQ are in an interesting place and I am not sure that breaking down services is the way to go. MEL-DRW-SIN sucks as does the new route to SGN. I will pay for a direct service, this local branch line train thing doesn't grab me.

I'm flying JQ SYD-HNL return in Nov08 which cost $290 rtn incl all taxes and CC charges.

Let's say its 8,000km each way (16,000kms in total). Also $290 buys about 190 litres of MV petrol (@$1.52/L).

To work how much fuel I consume per Km, it's 190 / 16000 = 0.011875L per km.

My car takes up 12L / 100km so it's 0.12L per km.

So it's about 10x cheaper to fly than to drive (in this instance)! And I don't pay for the asset purchase, repairs & maintenance, insurance and I get a driver (pilot) thrown in as part of the price.

How do they make $$$$

Anyway, the flight currently shows 32 out of 38 *Class seats available outbound and 27 out of 38 inbound.

As for the rest of the plane, it shows about 70-75% available seats to choose from.

The JQ SIN service is a farce. It's really just a way of extending their MEL-DRW service but why, I don't know. And why on earth would you fly it, when looking at the coming school holidays you can actually fly QF or SQ for less, without the stopover and on a proper international AVOD equipped aircraft.

After the school hols end you can fly it almost for free which may indicate how strong the bookings are :!:

As to SGN well I am :confused: Maybe that's just due to the lack of aircraft but also perhaps these DRW-SGN flights will be timed to connect with flights from MEL and ADL. Also The SYD-SGN flights are also pretty empty especially in * class so don't justify an A332 service. Anyway, you can fly direct to SGN from MEL or SYD on Vietnam Airlines which is a QF codeshare, so whats the point.:?:

I gather you mean $2900 return and you are in Starclass:?:

How do they make $$$$. I doubt that they do. QF loads on this route are higher than JQ. I was amazed that JQ didn't reduce services on this route.

On the plus side they said they had to drop SYD-KUL because they needed the plane, which is quite different to it performing poorly. I guess they made a decision that flying something to Japan was preferable to dropping out of that market.

Perhaps when they get enough hardware the route will reappear.

Sorry I should have clarified.

I'm flying the cattle class and yes my tickets cost $290 rtn incl taxes.

I did a dummy booking to get flight loading levels.

IIRC around $40 +++

The booking PDF doesn't break the cost down, other than it was $595 all up for 2 pax.

But regardless *Class seems quite light at present with 84% and 70% still available - so again the revenue side of things will be very low at present.

If you are going to try and upgrade at check in please report back about success/failure and cost if successful.

...I think TG runs 3 flights a day MEL-BKK and it does well. JQ struggles to sell seats on this route which QF has ignored for years.

Trying to get a premium class seat on TG from BKK-MEL is very difficult. A typical example:
