How bad is it. TA opinion.

Sorry I should have clarified.

I'm flying the cattle class and yes my tickets cost $290 rtn incl taxes.

I did a dummy booking to get flight loading levels.

It has been mentioned before that dummy bookings and looking at 'available seats' on the seat map doesn't give a true indication of loads.

Apparently if a seat is not pre-selected, which does happen often - it doesn't get greyed out.

Something to keep in mind if you were relying on it for some reason! Better to use EF or like.

If trying to score a starclass upgrade at the airport can I just stress how important it is to get to the airport early.

Ex-Sydney the loads aren't too bad but once o/s you do need some luck. Last week I tried to purchase an upgrade at coughet airport and I arrived 2hrs 40mins before departure and was told it was full. After asking the agent if they were 100% sure she checked again and with her manager and 1 seat appeared.

Tried to pay with AMEX but they didn't accept it and by the time I went to ATM to obtain cash and returned to desk this 1 seat was gone :(.

Cabin did appear full but did see a whole bunch of people pushing their qantas cabin bags (the ones the flight attendants have) into starclass.

Coming back from KL 3 months ago I purchased an upgrade 3hrs prior to departure and was successful. Cabin was about 90% full with the majority being jetstar employees. Both times starclass availability looked fine the day before.

Not saying I necessarily have a problem with QF and JQ staff having this perk- just that when it comes to starclass upgrades don't rely too heavily on EF and seat maps.

You might not but I do. Regularly used to see Australian Airlines cabin crew lapping it up in J on QF CNS flights when I was paying $1200 each way and couldn't get a reward seat. They would recline the whole flight and be in party mode. Not happy

I think QF made a big mistake when they limited the FF miles to the QF program only. Especially on the SYD-HNL route.

They could quite easily fill Starclass by calling it Y+ and allowing it to credit AA and BA mileage earn as full economy. The other thing SYD-HNL needs is to connect with the afternoon AA flights from HNL to the mainland (many of which have QF code shares). But that might transfer some demand from QF LAX-SYD/MEL.

At the moment the only QF flights I'm willing to pay for are SIN-PER-SIN and the odd filling in the missing award segment.

But I wander again

Fred

QF don't want to divert traffic from QF flights. Remember they still have a fair number of travelers and OW traffic who take a stopover in HNL in one or other direction. They also have aircraft to fill and $$$ to make.

Remember HNL has a 50 plus year history for QF. JQ is still on a test run. This route may not exist on JQ in the long term, but as I have said before I think it will remain in the long term for QF.

Thats a pretty good deal - were you on a Jetsaver fare originally?

On the way out I was actually on a jetsaver lite fare. Check-in agent was a bit hesitant to accept my luggage even though I had upgraded to starclass but once she checked with the service desk all was ok.

SYD-MNL is a chronic under-performer especially in the J cabin.

....

JQ to HNL only does well in school holiday periods. Otherwise flying fairly empty.
.

QF have announced the A330 will be put on SYD-MNL and SYD-CGK from January 09. Perhaps this will improve yields in J?

This will leave HNL as the only long haul 767 route.

Interesting. Where did you see this announcement?

Aha. So that will take up the extra A330-300 capacity they will have after dropping a few services. I think HNL will get added with A330-200 service once they have exact delivery date on the last aircraft VH-EBL. Then no more international 763 which I am sure has been QF's ambition for some time.

What about Perth-Tokyo?

So SYD-CGK gets upgraded from a 767 to A330, while PER-CGK goes from a 737 to a orange starred A320!

I always figured PER-NRT would get the "Flying-axa-a-Roo" and they would run passengers through SIN and on to Japan Airlines. We'll see.

Interesting that a marginal route like Manila that cannot attract the fares they charge SYD-HNL gets the A330 first. As I said earlier though it might not, may just have the availability of the aircraft confirmed. SYD-HNL probably not range suitable for A330-300.

Same, I was surprised too. Figured it just fitted in the schedules better as well? (I haven't checked them). Would an A333 be cheaper to run up there than an older 767?

If it isn't full??? Big aircraft, big engines! I figure that they just want to get 767's off international ops and will now do so wherever possible. Get the 763's onto domestic and Tasman and return the BA leased 763's and retire some oldies asap.
