How accurate are seat maps with American Express Travel?

Hi,

I have a flight from SYD to SFO leaving this Sunday (28th on QF 73). I requested a points upgrade from Y to J about 1 1/2 months ago using my uncles points (only a NB). When I look at seatcounter it appears that there are a number of seats still available, however, when I look at the seat maps on American Express Travel (through itn.net) there appears to be only one J seat available.

Does anyone know what to make of this?? Any advice on my likelihood of the upgrade would be helpful, might as well find out now if there is no chance :(

Thanks,

Tim

EF shows there is F9A9J9C9D0 for that flight, and its seat map shows as only having one J seat remaining available for selection.

Note that the F cabin only has 4 seats allocated so far.

So it would be my guess that QF is willing to pool the remaining F and J seats and sell them to someone wanting to purchase a J or C fare, expecting that they will then have an oversold J cabin and can upgrade some people from J to F. This is fairly common when it gets close to travel date.

Its also possible that some of the J seats are not actually allocated yet, and but blocked. QF usually blocks 11JK, 16ABJK, 23ABJK and 28ABJK as these are bassinet and exit row seats. So some of them may still be unallocated.

Either way, I would not be at all hopeful for a Y->J upgrade based in Silver status on that flight. But miracles can and do happen.

Can you please let us know if your upgrade request was successful. Thanks.

Note that generally, Qantas seat maps go into a 'modified' mode some time in the week before the flight. This affects seat maps on product like Expert flyer etc and seating can be misrepresented.

Seats are shown as been allocated or blocked, but they might not actually be so or, indeed, exist.

The seat map for this particular flight has gone into that mode. For example, it shown seats 1 E, 1F, 11D/E/F, 18J/K - none of these actually exist.
