Well, it was for the Exec Lounge/Club levels.

With club access, you get priority check-in at the club lounge, pre-dinner drinks and canapes, breakfast, bed turn down, late check out (if available), use of bathrobes, slippers, use of lounge during the day with complimentary soft drinks / snacks and generally better amenities.

That's the "Rack rate"; very few Hotels guests EVER pay the "Rack Rate" for a room.

And the only reason they have a rack rate is so they can offer 50% discounts so people think they are getting a good deal.

I suspect most hotels in Brisbane will be charging rack rate during the Ashes!

Actually, my normal costs for staying in BNE at accor properties are generally under $130 for Mercure; $150 for Novotel and $180 for Sofitel.

It's a busy night there tomorrow so the hotels are doing what any normal business would do and maximising their revenue.

$160 for Conrad treasury, $140 for Carlton Crest (the good rooms) but with the benefit of company rates! Kinda scary paying $300+ for a hotel... just can't imagine how they justify the "rack rate"!

I have often wondered how much more they would sell from the Mini-Bar if they were to charge more sensible prices for its contents.

My guess would be a lot more!

In Hobart the last few days and 600mL bottle of water in the hotel was $3.50. OK not overly expensive but I can buy 6x1.5L bottles in Coles for $6. Since I was already there not a difficult to choice to make.

Sofitel, every time.

Stayed there last week for 2 nights in a club floor room - the lounge on the top floor is great, with a perfect breakfast for the likes of me (I don't eat pig, so you can have your 'full breakfast').

If it's booked out, the Novotel is an OK substitute, and one of the best Novotel properties in Australia.

Anyone recommend Saville Southbank?

Stayed there in February about a fortnight after it opened (good opening special rate) while attending a conference at Rydges (basicly next door).

I didnt try out the restaurant so cant comment on that - there are plenty of other places to eat around Southbank, and shops to buy supplies from.

My studio room was nice and large with basic cooking facilities. King size bed, good desk and chair to work at and comfortable chair with ottoman to relax in while watching the large flat panel TV.

I caught Airtrain from the airport and walked from Brisbane South rail station (about 300m). Southbank station is also in walking distance.

Downside for me was the room telephone was a Cisco IP phone, thereby locking me into using the expensive in-house broadband if I wanted internet access. (I used the conference facilities instead for free). Apparently some of the 1BR rooms have conventional phone outlets.

I'd stay there again (at the right rate !) unless I particularly needed to be closer to places in the CBD over the other side of the river.
