Hostages Taken in Martin Place

I see he was on Bail, not Parole. That does make a difference. Charged as an accessory to murder with his current partner charged with the murder. Recently charged with 50+ allegations of sexual assault. Convicted of sending poisonous letters to families of soldiers who had died and served in Afghanistan and pleaded guilty to that and on a Bond of good behaviour for two years (starting 2013). Clearly being on a good behaviour bond means little then.

(PS, as a former Police Officer I do know what due process is, but read he was on Parole (ie had already been convicted) and not on Bail (awaiting the trial). The issue of being on a bond remains problematic though. ;)

Of course if he was on parole, then he would have already served his sentence. If he was convicted and awaiting sentencing then his bail may be extended.

Just can't help but think that Islam is where Christianity was at a few hundred years ago. Christianity and its different subdivisions can hardly claim to be free of violence and bloodshed.

Also whilst access to a Christian church for worship in Saudi Arabia is impossible, a number of Muslim majority nations (including the biggest, Indonesia and Bangladesh) have holidays declared for Christmas Day.

At least atheist people aren't hiding behind the veil of 'god' or 'religion' and pretending to be doing good.

Exactly. They are just bad people.

Um, I am an atheist.....

Apologies Pushka if I misinterpreted your post. Easy to misinterpret something that somebody writes ;)
I thought you were stating that atheists "are just bad people", clearly something I do not agree with.

Just found out that my sister in law's friend (whom I've met a couple of times) was one of the hostages (she was one of the 2 holding the flag up at the window), and was used as a human shield by the fu*kwit coward:evil::evil::evil::evil: when the police stormed the cafe...she tripped and fell, and the police then shot him dead!!! Still shaking on hearing this news!! My sister in law spent yesterday afternoon at the local police station as her friend texted her his demands which were for an ISIS flag and a live audience with TA. Spare a thought for the families of those killed and the hostages who survived!adding link

Was in Melbourne CBD today with friends and we went to the Lindt shop in Collins st. It was closed with flowers outside.

KPC we never realise just how far the effects of these action spread.Just hope your sister-in-law and especially her friend can find their way through these awful moments.

Unfortunately here in the Land of Smiles News Ltd publications are blocked. Some would say that is why they smile.

kpc just listened to the audio. It's chilling. I'm thankful that your friend escaped unharmed, she sounds like a very courageous young person, as were all of those trapped inside.
A very dark day in Australia indeed.
My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and families.

Sad to hear of the dead hostages.

Just reading through the news stories. This nutcase occasionally lived in his wife's house in my suburb. Loud prayers and he used to throw bags of rotting food over the fence. Lovely.

Watching the news tonight I can't understand how they got the terrorist on film through the shop window so many times and not one of the police snipers got a shot off to stop this madness before it turned into a **** fight later that night. A clean kill shot to the head I imagine would be a great deterrent to the next clown that thinks this sort of action is a good idea.

When are we going to realise that with these types, the chances of an outcome without civilian death are very rare indeed, strike first and strike hard!

Re the last couple of posts; I think in the US you don't see hostage taking because of just that, there is no need for a trial/court case after as the perpetrator is deceased.

I did wonder as well why the camera man could get a shot but not the police. Early on ok it wasn't know how many terrorists there were but later...?

I have a suspicion that this is much more to do with an insane person who happened to be islamic than a terrorist plot. That is not meant to diminish the tragedy - but it is directed at the maniacal and ghoulish media.

Insane or not I'd have no problems pulling the trigger on this guy, it might have just saved two lives if they popped this guy in the head when they had the chance and like I said before, might be a good deterrent to the next idiot that tries this.

Oh, I absolutely agree - and the thought had passed through my mind. In defence of the authorities, however, he did have a rather fat backpack on which could have been explosives wired for detonation in bizarre ways. I don't envy the police - whatever decisions they make have the potential to be badly wrong.

The point I was trying to make was that I don't think this had anything to do with ISIS/IS/ISIL - call those freaks what you like.

Problem is that he was claiming to have a bomb and to have laid other devices at different locations and they would be detonated automatically if he was killed. I feel that the police etc did an excellent job based on what is known and I would NOT have liked to have been making any of the decisions on this.

It has been linked to ISIS by the very fact that they have been calling on People world wide to undertake same and or similar acts and was it not an Australian recently killed in Syria that called specifically for Australian Muslims to fight the cause here in Australia. Was it not this call that contributed to the actions of the young lad that was shot recently by police in Melbourne?

To Say that this has nothing to do with ISIS etc is IMHO not correct.
