Hawaiian is upgrading to an A330-200 in May 2012 and getting rid of the old 767's!

You can earn Velocity (Virgin Australia) points with Hawaiian

However it's about $3300 return in business on Hawaiian while Jetstar is $2700 although sale fares bring this down to about $2000 return but lately there have not been many sales!

See below.
Hawaiian Airlines : Investor Relations : Press Releases

All new aircraft, AVOD and a reasonable modern business class with an odd 46 inch pitch. http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5098/5522248414_d605be8e28.jpg

QF now looking very old and very expensive.

For trips to HNL I'd take the JQ Business class over QF.

For that kind of money I'd be quite disappointed with the old 767s QF use on this route.
For sleeping, I'd take a nice comfortable Qantas Dreamtime seat over a slippery/sweaty leather Millenium JQi seat any day/night!

Shame on points and not SCs - otherwise I would definitely be booking with them for next year's trip to HNL. I also like the idea of flying Hawaiian to Hawaii...

You'd want to be sure of the new aircraft with Hawaiian. I have a colleague who flew in J with them recently HNL-SYD and didn't enjoy the experience, he's neither a WP or a frequent J Flyer

Indeed and it is not reflected in their schedules yet but I have no reason to doubt the press release. Hawaiian have a chance to totally clobber the Qantas group and their second rate (actually 3rd rate) offerings here so I am sure they are going for it. The new J is a completely new product and 8 inch more pitch and 6 inch more recline than JQ starclass. HA pricing is a bit higher than JQ but much lower than QF especially in J. Y has an all new seat with AVOD which is a big advantage over the competition especially in the family market.

HA - Daily service. QF - no JQ - no
HA - New aircraft. QF - no JQ - no
HA - AVOD. QF - no JQ - no
HA - Hawaiian. QF - no JQ - no :p

Ah I just looked at that as well, massive shame you don't earn SCs

That is not necessarily true,
QF J does have Personal IFE, more space in J, JQ do have a bunch of very new A330's that have AVOD for a fee, so the no's aren't always the case.

It's not AVOD on QF. It's a 20 year old loop system with a 6 inch screen and yes it's only in J. QF seat has a slightly greater pitch but the seat is narrower and very old and hard, the ticket price more than double for discounted J and often triple. Apparently JQ now have 2 A330's with a VOD system which is pay per view in Y and included in what they now extraordinarily advertise as "business class". 2-3-2 with a 38 inch pitch is not an international business class in any language (except that of JQ) 2-2-2 with a 46 inch pitch is getting there.

In the older A330's each row is 2-3-2 apart from Row 1 which is 2-2-2 (which means 2D has a lot of leg room). In the newer ones (can't remember) it is a carbon copy of the new QF domestic J (332) where it is 2-3-2.

Guess which seat I preallocated for July next year. Sorry Mrs 11 and Jr 11 the legroom is mine!

HA have moved forward the intro of the A330 and it will now be on SYD HNL from April.

Ah, that's nice. I have a flight HNL-SYD late April.

My booking on the Hawaiian Airlines site now shows Aircraft as A330 with the same seat allocation as the previous 767.

The First/Business configeration for the A330 is exactly the same as was the 767. i.e 3 rows 2X2X2

However, those with economy reservations may like to check their seat allocation as the rows remain the same but with 2x4X2 replacing 2X3X2 on the 767.

Good call!"

Just in case there is some misunderstanding, the original post was not refering to Hawaiian Airlines.

I'm flying with HA later in the year, but on the VA codeshare. I'm in J, so will be looking forward to trying out the new seats.

A question - I know that if I was travelling on that aircraft in J on the HA flight number, I would get access to the ANZ lounge at SYD. Will I get access to that lounge travelling in J on the VA flight number? There's no mention of this at all on the VA website.

I'm so glad I stumbled upon this thread - I've been tossing up whether to go on Hawaiian or Jetstar (economy), but couldn't justify paying more for Hawaiian if the only thing extra was food. AVOD availability definitely tips the balance.

On another note, if I make separate bookings from Perth to Sydney, then Sydney to HNL, is there a way to get the tickets 'connected', so that the baggage is checked through all the way? Or will that be done at check in?

One certain way is by booking through Virgin. The HA flight also operates under a VA flight number as a codeshare.
