Recently transited thru HK - once in the terminal we had 4 hours so off to the lounge. But the ongoing flight gate was not yet shown on the boards so we did not know which end of the ( bloody long ) terminal to go to.

We came in from LHR so we ended up near Gate 2 and used that very comfortable Cathay Pacific lounge. 3 hours later we needed to get to gate 69 so jump on the train and walk quite a way. Would have preferred to use the CP lounge near that end of the terminal but we did not know at the time.

Is there a secret to knowing ( even approx ) which gate we would be going to when arriving thru transit ? Before the gates are shown on the departure boards ? Seems HK only show the gate numbers about 90 min before takeoff.

Cathay Pacific Business Class was good ( 7 out of 10 - I am a tough marker ) but imho not quite at Qantas level. But the price was really good so all happy.

If I had more than 2 or 3 hours transit at HKG, and only had access to OneWorld business lounges, then I would head to The Pier business, even if I knew my flight was leaving from the other end of the terminal.

I'm not sure if TripIt or similar will advise of the gate more than 3 hrs ahead, but at that far out, the gate could easily change, so really not much use knowing.

With lots of time at any terminal, head for the best lounge, and then migrate to the one nearer the gate about 1 hour out :).

Not easy to find anything because nothing is signed. After the transit desks, go through security again on the left. Qantas First & Business lounge is on the mezzanine floor, near gate 15.

There may be a preliminary gate already assigned. Some of the tools available on the internet could have that information.

The CX lounges including CX transit desk should also have that information if available at the time.

Any of the CX lounges should be able to provide you with a small map of the airport which should help you out. I received something similar to this -

I would vote for The Pier (but I have not been to The Deck - near gate 16).

I visited both the Deck and the Pier recently and preferred the Pier. The variety of spaces seemed nicer. I do have a soft spot for the QF lounge though and personally find it to be one of QF's best. I find the staff there friendlier than in the CX lounges.

The Deck is not that great although a slight improvement on the old G16 lounge.

I'm not sure if this is always the case but the food choices across the 4 lounges are roughly the same.

EK and Qantas are the business lounges I would use if having access rights. The fish, beef medallions and/or lamb cutlets are excellent in the EK lounge.

The Pier first class lounge also offers a free 10 minute massage, wait times vary so book when you first get in but it's a nice addition, although if your access to the lounge is only via flying in business class then you wouldn't be able to get into the first lounge.

The Pier is the best and I'd avoid The Deck - a disappointment.
But I generally prefer a lounge close to my departure gate so I have more time to enjoy the lounge.

HKG is a great airport for lounges, but......scoring a gate in the 500’s is a right pain. Recently I’ve copped it more often than not with KA flights. Note to self: Get the CX operated ones into China.

Or stick to larger A330s. IIRC the 500s are for A320/B737 size?
Had a KA A330 into HKG on Saturday. No gate at all, scored a bus and we had to wait at the stand off bay for 15 mins for the bus to arrive.

That made my connection to CX rather tight and with the super typhoon looming I was a tad nervous. No need to worry, CX135 was delayed by 3hours. The only good thing was that we flew out of gate 63, right next to the Pier F lounge. Very pleased that the technical issue was fixed and we took off around 10:30pm. If we were delayed any longer it may have been a few days!

Husband is going through Hong Kong with Cathay. Just checking that the gates are likely to be close to the lounges?
He is Platinium and flying business /first to/from USA
Thanks

CX "The wing" first class is a cracker, the sit down restaurant was great and the bathrooms were huge. Will try the Pier next year, I've heard god things.

CX have lounges throughout HKG terminal 1. Two first class lounges. The Wing, on the far left after you emerge from exit immigration. The Pier, adjacent to Gate 62 towards the far end. In between is The Bridge J lounge.

If arriving on Cathay and going landside, there is an Arrivals lounge.

Thank you RooFlyer. He is hoping to duck out for a couple of hours

If his gate is a low number, then The Wing is closer. Should still be able to get to the Pier ( I think better) via the train, but he'll have to hoof it all the way back; but good exercise prior to a long flight.

If gate is a high number, then wing at first then train to Pier and then board :)
