Recently paid a visit to the QF lounge in HKG due to my flight departure on QF118 being very close. I normally go to the CX Pier lounge for its ambience and good food in the restaurant.

Arrived at the QF lounge around 20:30 and was told no hot food available, and the buffet food available was terrible. Asked for a supervisor and was told as the QF flights have already departed no more hot food. I politely reminded him that QF118 departs at midnight to which I just got a blank stare.

In summary no menu with hot food offerings, no hot bar food and no BBQ Pork which I remembered as being quite tasty.

Is this the standard experience? If so I won't return to this lounge, terrible ambiance, too many bogans walking around in their PJs with no shoes and no hot food for a meal before QF118.

The only thing I eat at the QF lounge is the cheesecake...

What a joke.

Yes they do seem to stop the cook to order service after the last few early night QF departures (ie those that leave ~730pm). IIRC, they also keep away the BBQ pork. Not sure why they do that though.

But its a bit unfair to say there is "no hot food" as I believe the buffet bar still has the hot food selection together with the salad bar?

Funny people complain here about the HKG QF lounge. On the CX FT board, people are complaining about the general degradation of the CX Pier (and Wing) and say to go to the QF lounge now. :)

I just visited it the other day (when they were serving the BBQ pork + cook to order service) and it was fabulous with the Little Creatures on tap.

In my opinion the restaurant menu at The Pier has gone backwards under the new company Sodexo but of course that's almost certainly because CX has reduced the budget per pax. However I'll always choose the quieter and classier ambience of that lounge over the QF space. Each to their own though.

Also with the 'no hot food after the 8pm QF departures', was this a one-off or a general rule? With the two post 11pm BA departures I would have thought QF would like a high percentage of BA pax for the revenue and freshly cooked food is certainly a selling point, or perhaps most BA peeps go there anyway if they're directed at checkin? I've always checked in for BA downtown, not at the airport.

i think when OP says "no hot food" he means the cook to order menu.
It seems to be that they stop that once the 7pm/8pmish QF flights leave

Yes by hot food I meant cook to order.

I had a great burger in the Pier lounge last month so not sure why people would be complaining....it’s a great space with ambiance I like even during busy periods. Anyone complaining about the Pier just needs a visit to the QF lounge to reset their expectations!

As a Platinum flyer flying J I would hope for some better options and service...why do I need to go to gate 63 of another airline to get decent food? First world problems but the QF lounge is borderline trying to be exclusive and luxurious, however with no dining service and bogans everywhere it gets firmly pulled down to the gutter.

The only positive were the polite friendly waitstaff (Filipina girls living in HKG) who did their best to provide great service with limited tools.

Edit: the night I was there the flight to MEL was delayed 2hrs and there was at least one later BA flight so the lounge was quite full....that’s a lot of money being saved by denying all those PAX decent meals!

I think most of the complaints are about the Pier J lounge.

As a WP I assume you were in the Pier F lounge? Not really a fair comparison...

I visited the QF HKG lounge in July and was as underwhelmed as I was when visiting the QF LHR lounge where CX offers far superior lounges in both ports. I also don't like being so exposed to the terminal as the lounge is in HKG but it does have a great tarmac view.

For OWS its great but for OWEs it's only a place to go if you don't know the alternatives.

The comparison is reasonable if you compare what QF make available for their WP with what CX make available for them.

While your statement is correct I don’t think it’s fair to compare QF to CX flagship F lounge in their home port.

This is exactly what I was trying to say.

It's like comparing EK J to QF F in Sydney, or CX J to JL F in Tokyo, etc. Home port advantage usually brings enough F pax to justify opening a dedicated F lounge, and let's not forget that from soon after the QF HKG lounge was opened until very recently, Qantas hasn't sold a First cabin to HKG.

Regardless of all that, QF make the CX F lounges ''available" to WPs by virtue of being a Oneworld member.

That's fair enough, I guess I am biased as I really don't appreciate the "International Business Lounge" concept.

Yes, I guess I was thinking more of LHR; but that's Off topic for this thread.

Removing Pier from the equation I would argue the CX J lounges are much better than QF.

No hot food / only cold buffet for international J/SG/WP pax with 2 flights remaining is pretty poor form.

But this is the same QF whose home port SYD J international lounge is a shocker.

Edit. For some reason I was asked to complete a QF survey about my J experience HKG-SYD. Feedback given.

That statement not true for everyone.

I generally find what I want to eat in the Wing F buffet or the Qantas lounge. And I usually visit the other lounges and I can assure you I'm not missing anything by going to those 2 lounges first.

Oh and sometimes I do like to have a cold Australian beer on tap.

Wasn't fond of the kids running around shouting, playing hide and seek in the main section on Monday night. A look around the room and there seemed to be a lot of upset people however the parents didn't do anything and the neither did staff.
