Re: HHonors Promotions

Mine seems to cap out at 80k. Was the extra limit a separate e-mail or within the system when you went to purchase?

My link had:

"Exclusive offer just for you! We've raised your points purchase limit to 160,000 Points through June 3rd. "

Mine was 80/80 which is not good enough to entice (although not far off). If I had your offer, I'd grab the full amount for sure!

Re: HHonors Promotions

I take it the buy Hilton points is better value in offshore countries,

eg. been recently looking at Auckland.
No Points + Pay.
So its 50,000 points.
or about NZ$220.
Lets call it A$200

With this offer its US$250 for (25+25k) - so A$300.

Even worse some nights at Hilton Sydney

The 2 for 1 pricing seems to be borderline OK, but as you say, one has to do the sums.

As an example, I've been looking at Hilton Tokyo and 5 nights (one nite free) comes in at 200k points which equals AU$260/nite (based on the Hilton promo rate). The best rate I can see is the US Para at AU$298.51 inclusive. The difference is really the ++ on the rate which is not attracted by the points.

Re: HHonors Promotions

I booked Conrad London recently, 3 nights 80k per night for 240k total.
Assuming it is possible to purchase this amount at 0.5c/p USD gives around 1200USD or around 280 GBP per night. This is a discount to the 330 it was running at when I booked. The difference in cost is probably higher than the points value I would receive on the stay if I paid cash, but not by a heap.

Your best value is somewhere like Conrad Rangali or Hilton Niseko in Feb. Rooms there go for around 300-400 AUD a night but are only 30k and further discounted with pay 4 stay 5.

Re: HHonors Promotions

I just bought some points and used 89,100 on 11 nights at DoubleTree Beijing. Works out at A$52 per night which is about 30% of the cash price. As an HH Diamond I get free breakfast and evening coughtails for that and probably a very nice upgrade. I'm happy!

It's those situations where I think buying points can be beneficial, I'll be buying some points for Hilton Foshan as it's normal rates are ~$130/night but only 10k/night. That's where the value is for me.

Re: HHonors Promotions

We had 80k+80k in both our Gold accounts.

We used this to book the Waldorf Astoria in Edinburgh for 4 nights over new years for 50k per night rather than 395GBP per night ($569USD vs Points cost of $250USD).

Re: HHonors Promotions

Is buying points targeted? Whenever I click on the purchase screen it just comes up blank

I wasn't targetted but when I log into account I see the 80,000 + 80,000 bonus offer.

Not sure of the logic here. Same ratio of bonus points. I would go for either if you plan to stay in Hilton. I wish I could buy more at this bonus rate irrespective.

True. The logic seemed to have "left the building" (maybe too many wines). The logic was intended to be that the offer is borderline OK. At AU$0.0065/point or thereabouts, value can be found, but it's nothing outstanding (IMHO) especially when you take the lost points into account on an outright buy proposition.

Buying points are fantastic if you plan on staying in $500+ night hotels.

The same approach doesn't work when you are staying in a $160/night hotel that requires 40,000 points/night. Or staying in a $130/night hotel that requires 30,000 points/night.

There is no logic in how Hilton sets the categories. For border line cases my preference is to earn points and airline miles.

Or the opposite end like the 5000 points per night Johor Bahru. But Points + Pay is generally the best at valuing points over the 1c mark.

Re: HHonors Promotions

Can anyone confirm that this still works? The website is dated 2015 and I can't find the reference to it from elsewhere.

I received the offer as a flyer (apologies for the pun!) in a recent letter from Virgin Money, so it should be kosher. The registration site works (and recognises card-type etc.) and I've got the two qualifying bookings lined up. I was going to book those stays anyway, so no loss if the offer doesn't work.
