Hilton Honors Points Earning

I rang reservation about this rate, and apparently it is not eligibe for the 20% HPC discount, nor will it get HHonors points (being a "promotional rate"). So, if you want those things, be ready to argue your case!

Thanks for that. Argue I will. My understanding of HPC is it's supposed to mean 20% of any rate, even discounted rates. Their FAQs read:
6. What does the 20% off any published, promotional, seasonal or weekend accommodation rate mean?
You will receive a further 20% off any advertised Hilton consumer accommodation rate for any participating Hilton or Conrad Hotel in Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. This includes third party accommodation sites. In order to receive your 20% discount you must book via Hilton channels such as Hilton Reservations Worldwide, Hilton.com, Hiltonpremiumclub.com, through Hilton Premium Club or to the participating Hilton Hotel. Your 20% discount is unlimited and available on any room type, any date - if the hotel has a room available you are guaranteed this room plus your 20% discount.
And I don't see where "promotional rate" is excluded from points earning in the HHonors T&Cs either.

This I will never understand. What is HHonors worried about? That someone will get status on a whole lot of cheap stays? It is already possible in many Hiltons in the US and around the world.

As far as I am concerned there should be no difference in being able to earn HHonors points (other than total HHonors points earned) for a $500 stay or a $90 stay. Hilton has still received money for the stay and they should credit HHonors points. I continue to argue my case with them and so far they have honoured all rates. The day HHonors stop honoring HHonors points for paid stays is the day to stop staying at Hiltons.

I believe the Hotel must pay HHonors ~5%, so if they can avoid having it credit as a 'stay' they reduce costs.

serfty,

Absolutely, however as you have stated, and quoted, in the past all stays booked through the web site are, by definition, eligible. The only possible exceptions I see are those HPC 'specials' that have no points earning written in their T&C.

Agreed, but it does not stop a hotel's management from trying. :-|

Over the years I have found this true of many hotels in Oz & certainly not just Hilton. In fact Hilton are one of the best at crediting without follow up.

Is a stay booked through a third party website eligible for HHonors points and Airline miles? I understand that it does not qualify as a stay towards elite status but it should earn HHonors points and Airline miles. Am I misreading the terms and conditions?

A stay booked through a "third party" may not be eligible for stay/night credit nor any HHonors points for incidentals.

The last point was made clear with a somewhat recent changes to the program's T&C's:
Accrual of Points
  1. HHonors points can be earned for hotel stays only at Hilton Family hotels. Participating Hilton Family hotels are subject to change at any time, without notice. Please visit Hilton HHonors, call 1-800-HHONORS or visit your local Hilton Reservations and Customer Care office for a list of Hilton Family hotels. If a hotel ceases to be a Hilton Family hotel, all stays subsequent to such date will not be eligible to earn HHonors points regardless of when the reservation was made.
  2. To earn HHonors points for hotel stays, a Member must be a registered, paying guest at a participating Hilton Family hotel and meet all of the conditions described herein. HHonors Members may also earn HHonors points for eligible charges to the Hilton HHonors® Platinum Credit Card from American Express®, Citi® Hilton HHonors® Visa® Signature Card from Citibank or Hilton HHonors Visa Card from Sumitomo Mitsui Card Co. Ltd. or Hilton HHonors Credit Card from the Bayerische Landesbank, subject to terms outlined in their Cardmember Agreement. See the Credit Card Terms and Conditions for additional details. Points may also be earned for other activities as designated by Hilton HHonors Worldwide, LLC, from time to time.
  3. A "stay" is defined as the total number of consecutive nights spent at the same hotel, whether or not a guest checks out and checks back in again. The term “stay” under these Terms and Conditions does not include any stays of the following nature: wholesale/tour operator packages; contracted airline crew rates; travel industry rates (including but not limited to travel agent discount rates); complimentary or barter rooms; Reward Stays; NET Group rates; Series Group or IT Group rates; contracted Entertainment or Encore rates; third party websites bookings (irrespective of rate paid); and "opaque" channel bookings where the brand is unknown at the time of purchase. HHonors points may not be earned for ineligible stays or during ineligible stays, including without limitation, folio charges incurred during ineligible stays.

The key word is "may". Generally it depends on the rate used by the 3rd party booking agency. If its pre-paid then I would not expect it to be eligible. If its just a reservation and you pay yourself at check-out then you may receive credit for the stay and points.

Yes I did misread the statement. It is actually quite clear if you read the statement slowly and assume that each of the commas refers to a different aspect of the HHonors program.

HHonors earning points for hotel stays said:
Stays that are booked via third party websites are not Eligible Stays irrespective of rate paid, for the purpose of earning points, miles or stay credit toward VIP tier status.

This kind of T&C is what irks me to try other hotel search engines like Hotel Club.

It might be alright if they have a directly bookable rate at contradiction to the hotel website, because you could just, say, call Hilton and tell them of the rate and hope they might match it. (Or they may just back you into a corner and say, "You either pay us with higher rate and get points, or book them for lower rate and no points - you choose".)

But when Hotel Club has a say 10% off all bookings or something like that, I very much doubt Hilton (for example) is prepared to meet a blanket sale like that.

... or you may not.

In any case, if the booking is ineligible, there is no guarantee of receiving Stay/Night credits or HHonours points. If it happens, more power to you - if not, so be it.

And I am not prepared to spend €210 on the off chance the stay is eligible for Hhonors points.

Better off booking a 2-3 star place with Hotel Club for much less and still get 10% credit to use next time.

If that €210 can be booked online with a Hilton Family website then it will be eligible.

No. Hilton is €232!

Hotel Club is €232 less 10% credit for future bookings and $65 Lanson Black Label Non-Vintage Champagne. That brings the price for 2 nights with breakfast at ~AUD300 and even better value if earning HHonors points and VS Flying Club miles for the stay on top of the Hotel Club goodies.

Athens Hilton would have been nice but if I can't have the HHonors points and VS miles then I can do without the champagne and I can stay at the Best Western near the Acropolis for AUD220 for 2 nights ($145 less than Hilton) and as a friend will be driving us all over Athens I do not like wasting that much money just for a bed for the night.

Fair enough - as a HH silver there's not a lot 'cept for a few bonii.

I guess my post was coloured by my Gold status where I am guaranteed (continental) breakfast.

The rate at the Athens Hilton does include breakfast for 2 people.

Perhaps I am making the wrong decision but my father is not too keen on spending that much money just for a room and I was just looking for a way to justify it although I have failed. Maybe next time....
