Hello,
I just joined up to Hilton Honors and start off as a lowly Blue member.

My understanding is that to qualify for Gold VIP or Diamond VIP you must accumulate 60,000 base points and 100,000 base points respectively within 12 months.

Is this correct? Or do I need to meet their qualifying nights / stays as well?

The reason is, I will be in New York next month, and will spend $4000USD on their Doubletree Suites Times Square accommodation, and I choose their "triple points" promotion. I would earn 120,000 base points in the one stay!

And I will be travelling quite frequently next year, so having Diamond status would be great to be upgraded and earn 50% additional points to retain status.

Thanks for your help!

Hilton allows you to qualify either on base points earned, nights stayed or stays (ie how many times you check-in/check-out). They operate a "Rolling tier" which takes into account your stays over a rolling 12 month period for qualification.

The various levels and their requirements are here:

Hilton HHonors® - About HHonors® - Silver VIP (Silver)
Hilton HHonors® - About HHonors® - Gold VIP (Gold)
Hilton HHonors® - About HHonors® - Diamond VIP (Diamond).

So for Gold, you could stay either 16 times, or 36 nights, or 60000 base points. You aren't required to do all three - just one of the three.

Bonus points in the form of promotions normally aren't counted as "Base points", so I don't think you'd earn Diamond during this stay.

There is a fast-track to gold offer mentioned here: http://www.frequentflyer.com.au/com...t-hilton-honors-offers-6147-2.html#post129863 (Gold after 4 stays in 90 days) which might assist you if you have several stays coming up.

Hi ALanslegal
I might have bad news for you :(. You are correct that it is an either or system - so you dont need stays and points. However I think you find that its base points only - i.e. only the points you earn on th 10 points per dollar spent (excl taxes) rather than on any bonuses you receive.
The same will go in subsequent years - you will only qualify on base points rather than on the Diamond bonus points.

There is good news though. The qualification rolling points thingo (technical term there) means that you can potentially use points to qualify in two separate periods.

Lets assume you stay in NY in July. If you manage to rack up points in Hilton later in the year to get you to Gold (say another stay in September) you will then be gold until Feb 2009.

To requalify for the next year to Feb 2010 if you have just one brief stay in a Hilton before July 2008 then the rolling points qualification thingo will count back to July 2007 - so you can easily requal for another year :)
I have a big stay in London next month that I am going to use for two years worth of qualification hopefully :D

I hope I am wrong on the triple points thing.

Out of interest how did you get the triple points thing? - that would be very handy for me :)

spending US$4000 will earn you 40,000 base points. Points earns from the triple points bonus or Silver/Gold/Diamond status bonus are not base points and do not count towards status qualification.

You can qualify for status by any of the following methods:
  • Base Points eared
  • Total Nights Stayed
  • Total Stays
So long as you qualify using one of those methods you will obtain the status level.

All the NYC properties are offering either double or triple points at the present.book through hilton.com.It just costs you more.It is not a targeted offer.
Also the US properties are getting stingy. In past years always got points on the total bill, now more and more it is just the room rate with taxes excluded.
As others have said the extra points do not count for status and if the amount you quote is the total payment may in fact be less than 40000 base points.

Thanks for the replies guys,

My spending of $4,000 will be just on the room rate only - no taxes (as I assume taxes etc would not be eligible for HH points).

The HH booking says its "DBL HHONORS BASE PTS DOUBLE HHONORS BASE POINTS" and "TRIPLE POINTS SUNDAY "TRIPLE POINTS WITH SUNDAY NIGHT STAY"HHNORS TRIPLE POINTS"

So i'm assuming if i chose the DBL HHonors Base points, would give me 80,000 BASE points (therefore I should qualify for Gold status with this one stay).

I assume the Triple Points Offer would give me 40,000base points and 80,000 bonus points (therefore I would be ineligible for any status from this one stay).

Interesting. Looks like I was wrong above (Can't recall seeing a bonus points promo go to base points before... )

Looking at the T&C for the Triple points on their specials page, it says the following:
Doubletree Guest Suites Times Square-New York City

"Earn triple Hilton HHonors® Base points when you include Sunday in your stay!

Stay at the Doubletree Guest Suites Times Square-New York City between April 24, 2006 and December 31, 2007 and you can earn triple Hilton HHonors® base points. Sunday night stay required. Book plan code HHS to receive this special offer."

The Triple points referenced when you click on that link is actually LDTHHS (not HHS) but that could be normal for this promotion as it is shared amongst other Hilton brands.

Whenever I deal with bonus points etc with Hilton, I always document things carefully because previously bonus points havn't always posted correctly. Ensure you keep a screenshot or PDF or similar of that incase you need it later.

Apologies for steering you the wrong way earlier...

Basically you earn base points on "room rate, food and beverage, telephone, laundry, pay-per-view movies, entertainment and recreational facilities, and other incidentals charged to the Member's room.". Many properties are not awarding base points on taxes applied to room rates.

You may also not earn base points for "3rd party" products and services charged to your hotel folio.

What you have to remember is that most people stay in a hotel for a night or two, a few longer stays accumulates points really easily.

And the benefits are great, I always get a great room, In Bangkok I was upgraded to a Suite (although they say you don't get upgrades to Suite).
Millennium Hilton Bangkok hotel
This is the room I was in, believe it or not. Great view, great city. I've had a couple of dodgy Doubletrees, so won't stay there anymore, but the Hilton NY is one of my favourites. Great lounge, and great views.

In practical terms it also helps the travel budget, because you can always book the cheapest room, knowing that you won't be staying in that room. My hotel room is my office, as is the case for most of you, so a bit of space, and comfort make all the difference.

Hilton also made a mistake in my favour when converting an Eastern European currency into USD$ and gave me 160,000 extra points, nice.

Great Hotel IMO; (I don't know why it's got such a dodgy rep as expressed on FT.)

Three stays in the last 7 months, three upgrades to executive level; although I have not had 'that' room. The executive floor has a 'continental' breakfast that is exceptional (includes an egg chef who cooks eggs to order).

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Did you try the coughtail bar in the "disk" on top, they had a really good American Jazz singer when I was there six weeks ago. Sitting amongst the clouds in a thunder storm was awesome too. I'll be back there for a couple of days R&R on my way home at the end of July, can't wait.

The Millenium Hilton in BKK was the only redeeming feature of Thaliand for me and mrssimongr in November - a truly fantastic stay - shame about Thailand and especially Pattaya...

The hotel is much better now, but when it first opened, they wouldn't cook you a plain egg... but would cook you an omelette or other egg creations. Believe it or not. Many other issues, pretty much resolved now. When I go back, will see how things are, but there is a reason why the hotel got dodgy reviews initially.

Unlike the 'Embassy Suites' in USA who will do eggs in numerous ways including an endless list of omelettes however won't cook poached eggs :!:

Go figure :?:

Do they use real egg, or do they use egg substitute? Hard to hide as a poached egg...

Sorry for going off topic but I guess Thailand is not for everyone but in general is a great place to visit. Even though Thais do not like farangs, westerners, they still produce a friendly smile and help out wherever possible. I really cannot say the same for places like the USA, UK (to some extent), France (most people speak English but for some reason refuse to lend assistance), Germany etc.

As for Pattaya, well what can I say other than utopia. It has everything you could want in life. Some of the best golf courses in the world no more than 1 hour away, night life to suit all tastes (you can stay in quality hotels to avoid the obvious), abundance of seafood, tropical fruits that I have not seen before nor able to pronounce, great food both local and western, nice beach, not Pattaya, further down in Jomtien, jet skiing, go karts, bungy jumping etc.

This is one of my biggest challenges in Thailand. I don't mind the odd omelette every now and then but most times I do not like my eggs over cooked so ask for sunny side up or over easy or soft egg which seems to be too difficult for them to comprehend. I have it written down it Thai somewhere, but keep forgetting to take it with me, and I haven't mastered how to pronounce it yet.

Yes, I was in Thailand last month and I thought it rocked. I'm 26 and ended up at a club, disco or bar every single night, but then again, it was an all-boys holiday!

Cheap yet excellent food, good local beers, nice girls (to look at it) and very value for money - imagine $7bux AUD for an hour full body (clean) massage!

However, if you do visit Bangkok again, there is 1 place that I highly recommended and invite you all to go to.... truly amazing!

The Dome Bangkok

and thanks to everyone who replied to my post, I definitely will take up the Triple Base HH Points offer when I am at New York next month. Staying 8 nights, I should be spending at least $4000USD plus taxes on my stay, so I should earn at least 120,000 base HH points, plus 20,000 bonus points for 'double dipping'. That's a total of at least 140,000 points just from the 1 stay.

and i should qualifiy for Diamond *fingers crossed* just for earning over 100,000HH points from the one NY stay!
