Heads up for anyone flying tomorrow. I know I won't be

Tried to use fly-ahead just now at SYD. Booked on 4pm to MEL but at the airport at 12:15. All flights this afternoon until 4pm are fully booked, so will be a long wait in the lounge.

Apparently they are still in the process of clearing the backlog.

Yes, I decided I would post pone all flights till next week. I had a feeling it would end up with me spending too much time in the lounge, which would inevitably end up in too much drinking.

Sorry if my knowledge of Brisbane is inconvenient to the stuff that you just make up. I have never seen the city shut down due to an afternoon storm. But then I only studied and worked in Brisbane cbd for 10 years. Clearly that knowledge is nothing compared to your 5 part time years.

Also you'll probably find that a Brisbane afternoon storm delivers more that a fraction of the rainfall. For example on 24 January 2014 BOM measured rainfall of 94 mm. About the same as Sydney received the other day. According to news reports that caused localised flooding and traffic chaos but didn't shut down the city. Shock horror! Same rainfall, same outcome. Who would've thunk it.
...

I have been here for 6+ years so I am not a fly by nighter.

I catch public transport all the time and every time there's a storm the city shuts down. I know it shuts down because I cannot get back to my apartment by train and have to go by bus. I believe the tunnel between Central and Fortitude Valley is the main offender but there are other areas as well.

I work at Toowong on the 12th floor and can see the traffic chaos caused by thunderstorms.

And for your information 94mm is a fraction of 143mm. I didnt take note of the rainfall the other times but aside from 2011 I would be surprised if it was higher. But next time the city shuts down I'll make sure I make a note of the rainfall.

But that's OK. I am making all of this up to look good.

In case you missed it traffic chaos is not the same as a shut down

143 mm was the highest rainfall at one location. Many other parts of Sydney had rainfall in the 40 to 60 mm region. Fortunately, all the numbers are available on line.

So you can keep making things up. But I'll always bring you back to reality. It's interesting that someone who admit they haven't checked the numbers feels they can denigrate a view based on long experience and actual research.

I would not suggest regular issues around the Western city and Milton area with heavy rain means "the city shuts down".

I have worked in Brisbane city for 16 years and could count on one hand the amount of times i haven't been able to catch the train home via the City-fortitude valley tunnel.... it just dosent happen.

20-30min delays yes but maybe a 1 in 5 year event that all tunnels are completely closed.

Was also here for the 2011 floods, the city received bugger all flooding.... Barely above the kerb on Albert/Mary St which is about the lowest point of the city (and a few low lying restaurants & carparks within the financial precinct which are barely above the water line on a king tide anyway).

I'd say as a blanket statement Brisbane city (not Toowong or Milton, which isn't the city) handles flash flooding / quick concentrated rain well.

Anyways my 2c... carry on.

Well that proves I am lying.

I must be imagining all the times there have been tunnel closures and power lines down.

Rain doesn't make power lines fall down. A fraction or otherwise of rain has not caused your power line failures.
