If not too far is truly that - don't QF still SELL points? Or am I confusing them with airlines in the USA

Happy wandering

Fred

They do sell points, but it's a very expensive way of getting them. There is a limit of no more than 15% of your current balance, there is a limit of no more than 20,000 top up points, and there is a limit of one purchase per 12 months. It's scaled between 2.7c a point to 4c a point depending on how many you buy.

I've done it once before when I was just shy (by 1,000 points) of the award seat I wanted. So for me it made sense (but only just) to do it.

Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, the Frequent Flyer Concierge team at Frequent Flyer Concierge will help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

If anyone wants to use the "points+pay" as maybe a type of replacement to the MASA (obviously heaps and heaps more points) it works out to approx $1 = 123 points. That's how I calculated it... Maybe people can use this if there is a cheap sale fare ?

Indeed, and being directly linked to the underlying fare, slaes should result in cheaper P+P. As I mentioned once I've already found a P+P award that was cheaper than a classic award.

So now these people will all run off to BAEC, AA or *Alliance. If they stay in Oneworld and still fly with Qantas then I think Qantas will still be making money from them. I think Qantas will survive. I hope Qantas survives.

FWIW I'm likely to move over to BAEC for several reasons -

I suspect QF is gearing up to leave OW.

I'm already LTG so no incentive to keep accumulating SC

BA Gold is a better ROI

Just want to take a step back to the discussion on JQ, the bundles have been enhanced in recent months where instead of a full meal, you get a voucher for a value which doesn't cover for the meal (or whatever it is they provide, depending on the lenght of the flight). While most people prefer to be able to choose something else, in bean counters term, it's a loss of value for the pax. The prices were also enhanced at that time too. This applied to other parts of the group such as 3K as well.

Also, for some sectors, the prices have also been made "simpler, fairer", with increases across the board, and some very short trips such as SIN-KUL on 3K being simplified to the same as, eg SIN-TPE, making it extremely poor value for such a short flight, where it would make up of $0 fare, $34 tax, and $30 plus bundle (all in SGD), virtually doubling the price of the flight to get 1000 points and 10 SCs to fly for 184 miles. I can't quite remember what it was for something like SYD-MEL, but I don't think it was $22AUD before.

For the starter plus bundle, it's basically charged the same way as a surcharge, and they can sometimes be of a very good deal. In pre-July 1st earnings, when SIN-HKG was on sale for $150 SGD return, adding the plus bundle both way takes it to $212 SGD, which paid roughly 6400 points as a WP and 40 SCs, while using both the SIN and HKG lounges (when they are open). Of course, even SCSCMs wouldn't go and abuse this given the small returns - try 35 return flights to qualify for WP. Having said that, an outlay of roughly $6500AUD is one of the cheapest way to achieve WP - if you don't die from insanity on the way.

As crazy as it sounds, post-July 1st, this 3K SIN-HKG flight increases earnings in both points and SCs, but obviously not of amounts signficant enough to earn someone status unless you make the A320 your home. And anyone who has to do serious flying between SIN-HKG would probably be doing so on CX or SQ to help maintain their sanity (and possibly their status in a different frequent flyer program).

And just to rub salt into the wound, post-July 1st, JQ starter plus SYD-PER, depsite being 400 miles further than the 3K SIN-HKG flight, earns less in both points and SCs. Not entirely sure where "fair" or "simple" comes into play here.

Can anyone (red Roo?) help with a definitive answer to the following (my assumption in brackets)

1) Status credits for flight in business BNE-LAX ( 180)
2) Ditto LAX-JFK (80)
3) Ditto BNE-JFK (180+80=260 as no direct flight)
4) Ditto SYD-JFK if on QF107 (280)
5) Ditto SYD – JFK changing aircraft in LAX (180+80=260)
6) Why can’t we have a points calculator that gives us these answers (have a view but unprintable)

Many Thanks

I emailed the same question to QF FF and had a nice lady ring me today who confirmed my assumptions, namely

Status credits for "normal" business class as follows
1) BNE-LAX 180
2) LAX-JFK 80
3) BNE-JFK 180+80=260 as no direct flight
4) SYD-JFK if on QF107 280
5) SYD–JFK changing aircraft in LAX 260

Simpler? Fairer?

Is number 3 meant to be BNE-JFK? Otherwise, it seems to be repeating (and contradicting) 1.

If they already have decided how many SCs they're offering for OW partners, how difficult is it to make a calculator that takes that into consideration? After all they've added a gazillion versions of "Economy"; therefore adding OW partners (with the amended SC earn) can't be that much more difficult, can it?

I would be quite willing to pay for PE instead of Y. Bit hard when most routes *cough*asia*cough* won't have PE.
So, rather then fold myself into a small Y seat on QF, I'll take a W seat on another airline.
Bit hard to fly premium classes on QF when QF won't provide them.
Your loss QF.

We all have our own situations but being a long way off LTG and having no QP membership then 140k points spent on it is better value than a one-way MEL-PER in Fully Flex Y (140,200). The 20 SC for the flight doesn't go very far towards SG and lounge entry.

Perhaps Saturday 28 June might provide an opportunity for an AFF lunch in Sydney or Melbourne. We can debate and commiserate, celebrate and verberate over some of the lounge's finest beverages.

Joining like that is pretty bad value, since a renewal at 75,000 = $470 worth of value. That same number of points can be turned into a classic award return flight. Ok so not as good as a JASA, but closer to $2000.

Just wondering. What made you use the words "Simpler? Fairer" ? No-one has actually been brazen and insulting enough to use those words to describe the current changes have they?
