Over the past few years, those who were unlucky enough to let their Qantas points expire have been able to get them back by contacting Qantas and requesting a points reinstatement "challenge". The challenge would generally require you to earn at least 2,500 Qantas points from at least 2 different program partners within 6 months, and upon completion you could get all of your expired Qantas points back.

There are some details of the challenge here: How to Reinstate Expired Qantas Frequent Flyer Points

There are some recent comments at the bottom of the linked article from people who say they contacted Qantas and were only offered half of their points back if they completed the challenge - which is rather disappointing. Has this been anyone else's recent experience?

Interesting development.

I have always been very much against the lack of clear warning from Qantas before points expire, (emails embedded in a constant stream of other waffle, etc) but I also acknowledge, that for better or worse, we all accept a companies terms and conditions....

From a technical point of view, Qantas does not have to offer anything - the points have expired as per the conditions, and that is that. So perhaps 50% as a show of leniency by Qantas is better than what they legally have to offer, which is zero.

And also, these cases are often reported by people upset with the FREQUENT FLYER program with the typical phrase of "I was a loyal Qantas customer but no longer!" Yet to suffer this misfortune they have not spent a cent with Qantas for at least a year and a half....

I am unaware of (and very happy to be corrected or enlightened) of any frequent flyer or other points program where there is some guarantee as to the value of points. Yes, some programs offer points that do not expire, but at the end of the day, if they can all just readjust the real value (due to either points per dollar or simply unavailability of redemptions) then we should see that there is no stability or security in these myriads of points programs.

Maybe I need @RooFlyer to chip in - he has a far more acid opinion on these matters that I always enjoy :)

If I stuffed up and failed to hold up my end of a deal that I had willingly made with a company, and they still offerred me a cheap and easy way of recouping half of what I should really have lost, I would be happy...

Addendum: (just to upset some) It never fails to surprise me how people will spend days/weeks/months of their lives researching and fighting when they feel they have lost out on something, yet they do not also take the ten or twenty minutes to actually READ the terms and conditions before signing up of something that they invest heaps of cash and hope in...

The only one I can think of, and I'm not an expert so could be wrong, is Air NZ's Airpoints... 1 point = $1. any fare, any seat can be redeemed for that $1/point.

I haven’t had to do a points recovery for a Qantas customer for about 18 months so it may have changed. If you can get a points challenge offer it is pretty easy to get the points back in a couple of days.

Without being an expert on Air New Zealand, I think from my recollections you are correct! But it also is perhaps the airline FF program that almost all AFF people agree is the worst :)

I love Air New Zealand - have flown them sporadically since the 1980's - great crew, great service, etc etc. But I simply will not fly them as a choice because there is simply no attraction in that FF program - maybe it is too honest and thus what you are offerred seems paltry :)

Interesting thoughts about terms and conditions. I didn't read or sign up to the current terms and conditions with Qantas. Sure the terms and conditions that I did sign up to said they can change those terms and conditions, with notice. Yet changes have been made without giving me the stated notice.
Therefore, it is difficult to support any claim that I willingly signed up to the current terms and conditions, especially when Qantas doesn't see the need to follow those terms and conditions at times. The fact that I'm still playing in their sandpit doesn't mean I'm accepting of the terms and conditions that have been forced on me.

If you continue to play in their sandpit you will continue to earn points and your points will not expire.

If you are genuinely concerned you can always hop out of the sandpit, it is not quicksand after all!

I guess you missed my point. That's ok. It's a complex thought, whereas AFF tends away from deep thinking.

Burn! Pass me the Aloe Vera.

Sorry you have to engage with us lesser minded folks. Understanding things is hard :(
Well you've taken my second post the wrong way as well. Certainly not a comment about intellectual capability. Just that I see many very polarised all or nothing views expressed around here.

Maybe I should've have said subtle instead of complex.

Vic, maybe, just maybe, a lot of those "polarised" views are the result of intense deep thinking by the posters involved? The fact that the views are so firmly held would perhaps support this conclusion? :)

OK, so with that all out of the way, does anybody actually have some recent experience with the Qantas points challenge? :p🤔

Were you offered 50% or 100% of your points back upon completing the challenge?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Yes Mattg they are the questions.
So far all the ones I have tackled did get 100% of their points back. One flew in first class too and now has a Woolies loyalty points earning card.
One of my friends lost 185,000 points and told me too late to fix it. She is now in a hospice so she won’t be flying again.
Anyone with the latest news should post now.

There are cases where Qantas changes, involving Qantas controlled things, are implemented immediately not after the required notice period.

I was laid up with hip replacements, over two years as well as a home downsizing, no no action and lost 200,000 plus points. Made contact with QFF and explained was given the laughable option to spend 5 k in 6 months. Got my original lot back plus a bonus of the same amount ( name withheld for obvious reasons
