Has anyone had success with the call-up "Marginal" xASA's?

Can anyone confirm that I can request an upgrade on an ASA booked into Z class? From my reading it's only classic awards and fares in E, N, O, Q and X classes that are in eligible however if I try and request an upgrade it comes up that my booking is ineligible

You need to call them to upgrade *ASAs. Can't be done on-line.

Yep, the online software is not smart enough to discern between a classic and a W/JASA.

Has anyone had any success with doing a mixed Y/J mASA booking on the one PNR? I'm currently on hold and have been for the last half an hour - I'm wanting to fly a mASA TMW-SYD in Y (no J on the Q400 planes) and then SYD-JNB on QF63 in J. There is X class available on the TMW-SYD flight and U on the SYD-JNB flight. However, the agent is telling me that she can't get the system to accept the booking at all.

Is it possible?

Find a Classic booking with an appropriate exclamation mark ??

1. Called earlier this evening. CSR's reply? "You can book these online. There's only Classic awards, which book into Uniform class, or there's Points + Pay." Sigh... HUACA...

Just called Qantas and asked to book the same thing, was told the exact same response. Can only do it online. I even read out the classes and she said nope, only do it online. Will try again in a few hours.

Just booked my wife on a JASA SYD-BNE-TSV return. 400 SC (DSC) 48k points plus $349.52 co-pay. Operator got a little bit shirty when I quoted right on Q 7740, demanding to know how I knew about it. I replied that I fly a bit and have booked these before, plus I am a member of AFF. "Yes, we know about THAT website was the response. That said, the operator knew what she was doing and got it sorted pretty quick.

Just tried now, Canberra, Sydney, Hobart return, out on 20th, back on 21st Jan, best that showed up was 32,000 points and over $800. I'll have to look at other flights originating in Sydney or something!

Outbound tickets will be available very soon but by the time the return flights are released classic award seats are likely to have disappeared. Can I book a false return date and then change to the date we require later at the expense of 3.5k points per person? Or do I book the initial flight and add the return on later for the same change fee of 3.5k? Any advice on this one appreciated.

With JASAs there is no points penalty for booking one way flights. I suggest you just book book a one way out bound flight as soon as it becomes available, and book the return flight separately when that window of oportunity opens. The only penalty is the $30 credit card fee per passenger per booking. But I would suggest that this is insignificant in the wider scheme of things, and much preferable to the risk of losing the booking by waiting.

I agree that this is a worry with long haul awards bookings. Especially with QF. I'm soon taking the family to Hawaii on QF, mostly on points. To get back I've used Hawaiian using AA points.

Do you have any AA points? or even an account? worth experimenting there too. I think their access opens even later than QFF though

Easy enough to test; look for a return flight classic award that is available at some random date, then see if the LHR-SYD leg is bookable as a one way award on that date. I think there is certainly more availability MEL-LHR than SYD-LHR in both directions and that is an (admittedly less than perfect) option for your return.

good point nice person.....there does seem to be a reasonable availability from LHR to Sydney and Melbourne in Oct and Nov 2014. So it seems like geordieladinoz should take the plunge on the first leg.
But I do agree that it is a bit nerve wracking only locking one leg in
