Grammar Discussions

I would reply with it is one of the slams that constitute a Grand Slam.

I guess that the majority of tennis players are from non-English speaking countries, hence the unintentional bad grammar.

I remember when I was chatting with a friend from Germany and she had the term 'ain't"...

Yeah, no! What the hell is a slam/s? It means nothing without the context of a grand slam. Grand slam event, major tourament is more correct. Trying to invent terms, like slam, because people mistakenly use grand slam just makes my skin crawl.

You will find out during your stay

OT: I don't suppose you are referring to a possible a/c outage. ;)

Having been to Thailand many times and stayed at hotels in the area I know that it is on Rajdamri Road very close to CentralWorld which was fire-bombed during previous demos. My wife's family says that BKK is very quiet and a lot of people are quite bored with demonstrations and have moved on.

Slightly OT but worth a mention I think.

I saw 3 interesting clients yesterday. 2 brothers, one thought May was the fourth month the other brother thinking it was the sixth month. I told them like most things, the truth is somewhere in the middle.

Their colleague filled out a document with a different spelling of his name in various sections.:shock: So how do you spell your name was my question.

I guess initially you would have heaved a resigned big sigh before asking the obvious question, I would have.

Damn, if it were SWAN IT I could have claimed it, but unless my +1 has been out shopping without telling me, I don't think I own a fancy, red, low sports car :(

So is it program or programme? Personally I use program.

For many years the federal government spelt ''program'' the way this newspaper does. But John Howard, spiritual son of Bob Menzies, insisted it revert to the fancy English spelling. Labor changed it back to the no-bulldust way. Now Tony Abbott, spiritual son of Howard, has reverted to ''programme''.
Pedants who know their stuff know the Poms - including Shakespeare in his day - used the simple spelling until the 19th century, when it was prettied-up during a bout of francophilia.

So is it program or programme? Personally I use program.

I used to just use "program" up until the end of high school, thinking they were interchangeable. After that, I realised the difference and adopted the British method.

  • Use program for anything to do with computers, e.g. "I have installed all required programs on your system."
  • Use program when you need a verb.
  • Use programme for a noun meaning itinerary ("programme for this evening's award ceremony"), TV or radio show ("we now return you to your scheduled television programme"), or a collection of work projects ("the boss is outlining the programme of work funded by BLT Ltd for the next five years").
