Just putting it out there but is it appropriate to call Qantas club receptionists "dragons"?

For a forum that tries to be very well mannered 90% of the time I find this a bit strange.

On this site, lounge staff are usually referred to as 'Lounge Angels' or 'Lounge Dragons' (or Angels/Dragons for short), depending on what kind of mood they are in and how the interact with customers - it's nothing personal (and FWIW, most that I come across would fall into the 'Angels' category) :)

Who's the barman, with a bit of a lisp? He's pretty good and knows your drinks. Dark hair, little bit chubby. Seen him in the J Lounge and the QC.

It is a fairly common form of endearment used here and on FT even if those who really deserve the title are in the minority.

It doesn't apply only to QF. It applies to all airlines equally, you will often hear the term "lounge angels" as well.

The point is that it's the treasure which is well guarded By either of the above.

Not just Qantas reception but lounge reception in general.

The term is actually quite appropriate to those who love to treat their customers like sh.t....

A bit of thread necromancy, but it's great to see Graeme back behind the bar after some time off, whilst some of you may already know, he's just become a dad for the first time, a healthy 3.6kg boy with the great Scottish name Gordon.
Now there's a proper Scottish name! Good on him!

Worthy of a first post, at any rate. Hi AFF! :D

Now everyone needs to walk up to Graham and congratulate him on the birth of his boy. He will be so confused!

Graham is a lovely bloke. Still remembers my drink of choice and had a lovely chat about his 4 months off and the new addition to the family.

I think the term "dragon" is perfectly appropriate for those old, cranky employees you see on many airlines from time to time. Hard to be missed, especially on 'legacy' carriers like QF, BA or LH. Not to forget the North American airlines, chances are there's at least one of that kind on any flight.

Saying that- I personally wouldn't use the term for grumpy employees on airlines such as Ryanair. In my eyes, you need a certain class of crankiness and a matured bottle age in order to deserve this term! :p

This is a true lounging dragon

Some thread necromancy, but found out today that Graeme has left QF! He was the last QF employee in the J Lounge catering team.

As to where he has gone, no idea but good luck to him.

Been wondering why I hadn't seen him in ages.

Yes. Apparently he did not want to join the new company and left. I asked where he had gone and apparently he did not tell anyone of the staff there what he was doing or where he was going.

I hate to see good people go, even more so when it should/could be easily avoidable.

Graeme was good but the staff there now are good as well.

They remember me and my drink and always up for a chat. Golf is a good man. Always greets me with a "Sawasdee khrap" and a smile. Answer back with a "Sabai sabai" and talk about Thailand.

Some of them go out of their way to be obnoxious and officious so, yes, I'm afraid.

I have switched to earlier flights to BNE. I will be in the lounge until ~3:45pm. From memory you are there later in the evening.

Yep, I get there at around 6:30pm or so.
