yeah i can't imagine you being up the front and the gf down the back going down too well... lol.
Kevin could let his girlfriend sit in J seat while he slums it in WHY. ;) Think of all the brownie points it will generate. :p

i'm still trying to work out an appropriate conversion rate for FF Points into Brownie Points ;)

eg: in my mind i sometimes wonder "is using 48k points to upgrade her worth the amount of smiling and happiness i am going to get back for a few days, or should i keep quiet and keep the points for my own upgrading purposes". yes i am quite sad...

You would not be the only one around here that has had that thought....

Oh, that's the easy part. What is the cost to the relationship if you travel in J and she in Y? That should put a value on it for you :p

On my recent trip to Beijing, I tried desperately to switch seats with her on the way back (she had gone to Beijing ahead of me, so not an issue then), and she refused;) I felt very uncomfortable (not in the physical sense!!) seating in J (needed the SCs to requalify for QF Gold!) whilst she was sitting down the back:oops::oops:. From then on, I vowed that I would never let this happen again....we will both seat in J (if I'm feeling rich!) or we can both slum it down the back!!

Anyway, I'll put in for an upgrade for W+ on the SYD-LHR leg on QF...I see it's 60K points each, so not too bad. As both tickets were bought separately, what would happen if one of us got the upgrade, and the other didn't? Agonising decisions again...

Do you think I could ask QF to either upgrade both of us, or neither? Any thoughts on this??

lol.. yeah sounds like it might be better longterm staying in the back with her, and her never finding out what its like in J :)

Under the old RTW rules the cost of upgrading a Y segment to Y+ on a LONEx was AU$600 except for OZ-LHR direct which was $900. Worth a check with the ticket issuer.

I HIGHLY recommend SYD-HKG-LHR for the same reasons mentioned earlier. Can you come up with the AU1200 for that one long leg? Even if it means SYD-HKG-LHR instead on SYD-LHR. Note the access to the CX longes in HKG. Note also the difference in QF SC earning as well. And the vast difference in mileage earning on AA FF accounts.

YMMV

Happy wandering (expecially while young and with gf )

Fred

As Plat, I never got an upgrade HKG-LHR or LHR-HKG with BA when in WT+. While others may think the chances are high, choose the ticket you really want to buy.

PS - I do really dislike BA for flying, moreso now than before.

:mrgreen:for those that know me...young at heart anyway!

Anyway, I think I'll try out how I go in WHY this time:rolleyes::shock:...if I survive it, it will give me plenty of food for thought for my future trips! Now to go and transfer points into my QF account so that I at least have 120K QF points for those 2 elusive upgrade:rolleyes:

That is a tough one to predict. I don't think it is up to QF staff to make that type of request. You can request an international upgrade between 90 days and 24 hours before departure.

Remember that even though you are travelling together the upgrade will be determined first on availability and then on status. So even though a QF Gold is requesting the upgrade and the FF points will come from the QF Golds account the upgrade for your girlfriend will appear as an upgrade requested by a non-status, OK probably bronze, flyer. The ideal scenario is that you both get upgraded but it may also mean that you could get the upgrade but not your girlfriend. Again in the bad books.

You can cancel the upgrade request up to 24 hours before the flight, at no cost to you, but once inside this time frame and an upgrade has been granted then you will forfeit the FF points if you decide to cancel.

If your company will fly you J, you could book 1 J seat and 1 Y seat, then request the upgrades for the Y seat. If upgrade doesn't come through, swap seats throughout the trip with your partner, or swap with the peron next to your partner, I'm sure they will not complain with a free upgrade.

If the upgrade is requested by the Gold member on behalf of the NB, then it will be processed as a Gold request. So put in the request for both at the same time, and they should be done in order.

Still a huge risk that you will only get one of them though. Normally i would suggest linking the PNR's and then putting in the request (so that its all or nothing), but this may not be possible depending on how your corporate ticket is booked. Prob best to just ring the FF service centre and have a chat....

The reputation for regular W-J op-ups on BA are because BA tend not to be as strict with yield management as QF - they overbook more often. And with just 30 W seats but 70 J seats, there is a good chance they either need to move Y into W or W into J or both. There is possibly a lower ratio of status:nonstatus pax in W (always seems full of seniors and OAPs to me), so when the op-ups happen, the status pax will get it. The status pax are more likely to post on FT or AFF, so this leads to a perception that booking in W will often get you into J - which it may well do for some people.

However, BA has a rep for looking after their own status before OW (refer to CIV scores on the FT BA forum for more info on this), so BA silvers are more likely to get those op-ups than QF or AA people. In short, as Mal says - expect nothing.

All that said, apart from the SC's the BA W cabin does little for me. The extra space is nice, but if you are tall the seat isn't a lot better (its wider though which might help some people). The footrest is useless and doesn't help, and the arm rests don't move. You get much the same service as Y.

QF international Y is not that bad these days compared to other carriers (I never thought I would be saying that). If it wasn't for the totally full flights I seem to always get, it would be extremely tolerable. It is much better than BA - like Mal i avoid them too now.

QF W will be a lot better I think - stick with them and try for a points upgrade.

Her ticket is in "Q" class which is not upgradeable:(, I've just learnt. Any way, I hear a higher calling, and I will just settle for seats in WHY:-|
