A new master plan is being released today, will be interesting to see the local reaction and read what investment in landing equipment/facilities is being planned for!

AUSTRALIA'S fastest-growing airport, the Gold Coast Airport, is setting its sights even higher with plans to more than triple passenger movements over the next two decades. The airport will today release a new draft master plan envisioning 16.3 million passenger movements by 2031, comprising 14 million domestic passengers and 2.3 million international passengers.
The airport currently has about five million passenger movements a year.
The plan includes protecting land for future expansion, an assessment of noise levels and and provision for a possible rail terminus.
"In the next five years, Gold Coast Airport will facilitate 2.61 million visitors (tourists) annually to the region who are expected to spend $2.17 billion in the local economy," airport chief Paul Donovan said.
"In the next 20 years this figure will increase to 5.47 million visitors expected to spend $4.53 billion in the local economy.

Great, Gold Coast airport has pleanty of space around it to build up.

I see the current terminal being a problem, wouldn't surprise me within the next 5-10 years we see a second terminal being built. Hopefully something that isn't a giant tin shed[SUP]1[/SUP] without boarding gates.

[SUP]1 [/SUP]It's a nice tin shed, I have no problem with the terminal.

The parking is a problem, they need to start construction of multi story parking now.

Couple this with the VA lounge coming next year and OOL will provide healthy competition for BNE domestic, apart from those with a penchant for QF metal.

To achieve these sort of forecasts will take some significant spend on infrastructure and, I imagine, a lot of community consultation. They need to increase the apron area (currently working on this), further lengthen runway 14/32 to the south, after acquiring the land needed and calming the residents and local pollies, expand the terminal (upwards maybe) and complete the missing section of the main taxiway C. Much of the vacant land to the south and west is environmentally or culturally significant and can't be developed. It has been interesting to see the progress over the last 5 or so years and will be fun to see if they can turn what was essentially a 'regional' airport into a full blown international port with direct china flights, etc.;)

I'd love to see just one decent international airport in Australia. I don't really care where or which one. Sydney international looks like a garden shed compared to most international airports and sadly the however many billions just spent on it has only mildly tarted it up. Nothing significant was built or added to it. Come on Australia move into the right century and have an airport that at least matches those in 2nd world countries around the globe.

I kind of agree with you here.... I can always find a carpark, however it can take my 5-10mins of looking around.

If they build a multi-story carpark, I've got a feeling prices will go through the roof, as well as the time it takes to get to/from the car to the terminal. (Which, currently, is very, very, short)
