Europe, in OWE-speak, is not exactly Europe in your atlas. Includes certain other destinations like Egypt.

If OP decides to take AA Plat Challenge, and book the OWE ticket direct with AA in the US, it's a good idea to tell the agent that wherever possible, book me on AA flight numbers. I'm flying AA codeshares (QF/Jetconnect metal) MEL-AKL-ZQN-AKL that I didn't know existed, and can be a bit of a hassle finding otherwise. Maybe the agent would have booked me on AA flight numbers regardless, but I did specifically ask, and I received!

OK, What Kiwi Flyer is illustrating how mauch more beneifit he can get from a xONEx by starting at a place that is not his home country. A xONEx is limited to 20 segments and with the convoluted rules he is far better starting off anywhere else than Kiwiland (AKA East Islands) in regards to flexibility.

More specifically, once you return to your country of origin when travelling a xONEx you can no longer leave it.

I am in the middle of such a trip starting in Sri Lanka in business class. (I began in Columbo as it's ~$3000 cheaper in price than in MEL) After Sri Lanka, I then went to Hong Kong, Tokyo, Auckland and Melbourne. That was in October.

December I went MEL-PER-CNS-MEL (can't do that any more due to rule changes. Next time it will be something like ADL-PER-CNE-MEL with a red e-deal to ADL)

Next Week I am starting (MEL(red e-deal)-SYD-LHR-DBX-LHR-LAX-(award)MEL.

I do the US in June and in October, will travel back to Sri Lanka and intend to collect me tickets for the next trip(s).

I relation to getting the beast value; the Asian and SWP trips when combined with the travel I already had for tmy Frequent Flyer "year" (ending in October) gained me WP. The remainder of the travel in my next "year" will requalify me for WP again + get Partner Gold for mrs serfty who has been partner QP (paid) for 10 years.

Great planning serfty along with the help of the south-east islander Kiwi Flyer. The way you have broken it up into segments it is more like multiple RTW's for the price of one. Again well done and thanks for the tips.

Apologies here are the continents for xONEx

NA = north america (US, Canada, Mexico and Caribbean)
EU = europe (europe, some north africa countries, middle east)
SWP = south west pacific (australia, nz, islands)
Asia = asia (excl middle east)
Africa = africa (excl some north africa countries)
SA = south america

Sounds great. Except - When I went into qantas travel they said that at the time of booking the xONEx ticket you HAVE to book all the segments then and there. Is that true?

So when you buy the ticket and want to go on multiple "trips" like is being posted above, over the course of a year, you HAVE to book EVERYTHING for that year at the same time.

It would be nice if you could book all the legs you want to travel, come home, contemplate life and then decide where else you want to go.

Yes you need to have a routing specified at the time of ticketing, although dates/flight numbers may be left blank (called OPEN segments).

As with most tickets you can change a xONEx upon payment of the applicable fee. Note that simple date changes generally wont require reticketing - but any change in routing will. Any time it is changed the changes will still need to comply with the appropriate rules (eg you cant do a change to get 2 stopovers in the same city).

Also note the extra trips serfty refers to are on additional tickets (paid or award) to/from convenient break points in the journey (generally places it is cheap to return home from).

Be warned that leaving segments open-dated can cause some problems later on. I know some people like to have all segments as open dated, but I never do this. I always include a date with all segments just to ensure I am protected against schedule changes.

With a OneWorld Explorer fare, you can make date/time changes at any time with no penalty, so long as there is availability in the class of travel for the fare type booked. There are no more and less change restrictions if a ticket is open dated or not, it all comes down to the same availability issue.

But, and here is the but has cought out quite a few people in the past, some routes are either seasonal or can be changed if the operating airlines cancel the routing or alter the schedule. So if you hold an open dated ticket for a segment that is later altered by the airline (say you have DFW-AN and they choose to stop the seasonal route early, or you hold BNE-CHIC and QF drops that route), you may not be protected by the airline and may be in a situation where you cannot confirm an actual date for that sector and have to choose between having the remaining ticket invalid (you must fly the sectors on the order booked and cannot skip a sector) or have to pay to have the ticket re-issued with a new routing.

However, if you have a dated ticket for that changed sector, you are protected and will be re-routed to that destination in some manner that is mutually acceptable to you and the airline. This re-routing will be done at no cost (no re-issue fee) and may even mean you exceed the maximum sector count.

So my advice is to book the sectors you plan to take and give them some arbitrary dates. You can change the dates/times later as you know when you will actually take the flights. So choose dates further out rather than close so you don't get caught out by forgetting that you have an early date and find it comes and goes and you have missed the flight and hence invalidated the remaining sectors.

Making the booking

I was the OP of this question - and the beneficiary of all the good advice - thanks again folks. I am in awe of all the experience out there and your willingness to share it.

We are now doing our bookings with our very helpful Travel Agent. We're using a OW Explorer flying mainly with QF, BA & AA.

It looks like our itinerary comes out at 36,514 miles which is over the "limit" of 34,000 miles. Clearly we have pushed the limits on this fare, mainly due to the help from this site!

I don't want to give my long suffering TA any extra grief so was wondering how the mileage rule is handled:

1. Is this rule rigorously applied? If we reduced it to 34,400 with a bit of tweaking would it still be unacceptable - what are the limits?

2. Does the booking system reject "illegal" itineraries?

3. At what stage in the booking process can we be confident that the booking meets all the rules? I'm worried about getting a phone call a week before we go advising the the itinerary needs to be altered to meet the rules.

Note: I did originally try the itinerary at this very clever site: http://jph.bytestacker.com/award.htm and it seemed to pass the rules test but I wasn't able to access the site today to see if it can do mileage validation as well.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

There is no mileage limit for a OneWorld Explorer fare (xONEx fare basis). The 34,000 mile limit is for the OneWorld Global Explorer fare (xGLOB34 fare basis). And the 34,000 mile limit on that xGLOB34 fare basis is strictly enforced.

The OneWorld Explorer is limted to a maximu of 20 sectors (limits per continient), and by the number of continents visited (minimum 4 continents for any purchase from Australia).

Make sure the TA has actually booked the OneWorld Explorer and not the Global Explorer fare.

Ozzy-Don, from the info in your PM, the TA has quoted you the DGLOB34 fare which is the Global Explorer. That fare is limited to 34,000 miles and cannot continue after returning to your point of origin.

You need to ask for the OneWorld Explorer (DONE4 fare basis), which is based on the number of continents visited and can continue in the continent of origin after returning to the port f origin, so long as you:
  • don't exceed 20 segments in total,
  • don't exceed 4 segments in the South West Pacific continent,
  • don't exceed 2 stopovers in the continent of origin,
  • Don't have more than one international departure and one international arrival to/from the country of ofigin

Getting there!

You were right NM, they were specifying Global Explorer rules rather than OneWorld Explorer. So the milage issue is solved.

However, they are still saying that you can't continue past the point of origin.

I'm currently booked (after leaving Oz from MEL):

SIN>SYD (and pause the DONE4 fare)
SYD>MEL by Rededeal
MEL>ADL by Rededeal
ADL>PER (restart the DONE4 fare)
PER>MEL (and finish the DONE4 fare)

Obviously I'd prefer to do:

SIN>MEL (and pause the DONE4 fare)
MEL>ADL by Rededeal
ADL>PER (restart the DONE4 fare)
PER>MEL (and finish the DONE4 fare)

I bellieve going via ADL is necessary to comply with Qantas "Flight Limitation" of only one non-stop flight between PER, Brisbane, Cairns, MEL or SYS

If, as you suggest, I can travel beyong point of origin I could do:

SIN>MEL (1st stopover in MEL)
MEL>ADL>PER (2nd stopover in PER) this is NOT a nonstop flight
PER>MEL (and finish the DONE4 fare) this is a nonstop flight

Anyway, I called Qantas to confirm travel past point of origin rule and was told that the rule DOES exist. "It is a general rule that apply to RTW tickets - no travel past point of origin. She was not able to tell ne where I could find the rule.

I think I will book the flights as per the last option above and see what happens - the ticketing system must do some validation.

Thanks again for all the help.

That used to be the case. The rules changes about November 2004 and removed that restriction. Ask the TA to look at the rules again and not just go from memory. Ask them to tell you the exact wording of the rule they believe prevents you continuing beyond the point of origin.

yes, the rule is as follows:
Code:
Within Australia - only one nonstop/single plane service flight is permitted between the following points
BNE/CNS/SYD/MEL - PER
MEL/SYD - BME
MEL/SYD - DRW
Exception - No restriction between SYD/MEL - PER for passengers originating in PER
when in conjunction with travel to/from - JNB/BOM/SHA/PEK.
                  - No restriction between SYD/MEL - PER for passengers originating in New Zealand
when in conjunction with travel to/from - JNB

The rules used to be specifically stated in the fare conditions. It was removed around November 2004. I have booked and travelled DONE4 ticket starting with BNE-LAX and ending HKG-BNE(stopover)-MEL(stopover)-SYD with a sep ticket to get me back to BNE as I had then used my two Continent of Origin stopovers.

Note that the rule exists in the Global Explorer fare rules as point D in the Flight Applicaiton/Routing section as follows:

Thanks again for your assistance.

Thanks in particular for the applicable rules. I note that on the Qantas web site, Global Explorer rules, it makes no reference to "no travel past the point of origin" rules D.

I also note your example itinerary where you terminated your DONE4 fare in a city other than where you started. Does this mean we could do:

SIN>MEL (1st stopover in MEL)
MEL>PER (for 2nd stopover in PER) this is allowable non-stop flight
PER>DRW (and finish the DONE4 fare)
DRW>MEL (by RedeDeal)

When I get this all sorted out I'll post a summary so that others can see what actually happened!

Yes you can. You do not need to finish in the same city. Generally you have to finish in the same country, with a few noted exceptions. So an open-jaw final segment within Australia is fine.
