General Medical issues thread

Must be going senile. Someone just mentioned Frankie4 shoes and now I cannot find the post. The Jackie V Black Tumbled looks great and moisture-proof. Pity they don't do it in a Navy, would be great for MrsP.

Any advice would be appreciated?

Can't offer any advice , can offer sympathy though... hopefully one on the doctors will respond.
It seems 200 is the entry point as I presented in the 160>180 range but the "tension" of the ER tipped me over 200 and I was quickly admitted
Thanks.

Have you been able to get the BP under control?

It was a few years back, and caused by a partially blocked LAD.
A bit of drilling , a stent and off you go tgh...
My Bp is labile and swings with my stress levels and wellness..but has been mostly around 110>115 for a long time now

And @JohnK there are many doctors that really do understand weight loss and get good results when their advice is followed. In found this with several patients and when I eventually followed my own advice it worked just fine with a 35KG weight loss over 18 months.
The real downside is you must continue on that same lifestyle to make sure you don't just put the weight on.

Yes @drron there are many doctors that understand and care but its so hard to find a good doctor especially in medical centres.

My previous GP highly recommended stapling stomach. Let's forget that it's expensive it's way over the top. I don't want to do it.

He then recommended Saxenda. We've tried to get on PBS more than once but failed each time. At the time cost was around $500/month and I think thats now $400/month but no guarantee that you'll lose weight.

Fat blaster is cheap with specials/markdowns but I think Optifast and Optislim costs can add up. Without sacrificing trip to Thailand funds are very limited.

As well there are differences in each of us and that comes to our metabolism as well. For those that read this thread wvill be aware that there is no one else in this world put together just like you.

For what it is worth my plan is simple. Just eat less and forget the calories. Then exercise more. You eventually find the right combination for yourself.

I've tried eating less. It doesn't work. I'm OK until about 6:00pm but then my mind refuses to leave me alone. Keeps nagging for me to eat. Even when I eat it's asking for more. Stressful. Depressing.

Don't ask me how but yesterday managed only 1200 calories which is a huge win. Now to keep going.

You can change your mind, especially as it is trying to kill you.
Decide to live, find the enemy and neutralise it, be stronger
Psychosomatic diseases like this can be treated, ask for some help

Looking for some recommendations. I broke my foot 6.5 weeks ago on the left foot Stiill pain on the area before the toes (ie the pressure point where you walk) and on the whole of the left side of my foot. I am now out of the moon boot. and so every step hurts Scans have confirmed that current pain is just part of the journey,, not new injuries.
Am going overseas in 2 weeks. What is the best shoe for someone in my situation - sneaker or hiking boot? Looking for something that is going to provide maximum support and protection and hopefully "lessen the blow" of each step. Any brand recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks
Others have chimed in responding to your question re shoes @Ilovetotravel
I did a similar injury nearly 2 years ago, GP recommended a good physio who gave me some exercises (normally, I'm not a fan!) and some good advice to aid in my recovery.
Happy travels.

I know they can be treated. Where do I ask for help?

RBWH has the program I mentioned but 3 shakes a day. They offer psychological help.

I'd be happy if I can get into an outpatients clinic but apparently unless you threaten to commit suicide they won't take you.

Or you can pay a fortune out of your own pocket. Not a viable option for me. So back to square one and try to fight the demons alone.

Where do I ask for help?

No point unless you commit to taking the offered help.

BTW -weight loss. Since an operation I stacked on the weight as I couldn't exercise for a year. I just kept eating as I did when I was exercising (a lot).

Still can't exercise enough to lose weight, so now I'm on mounjaro. Costs abt $350/month - non PBS. I'm retired, no employment income but I'm doing it because I value my health above the cost of the medication.

Worth a mention about the calibre of member you meet on AFF. @andye was aware I was overnighting in one of the hospitals in which he works. As it happens he was scheduled-on in one over the other side of the city the day of my procedure. Nonetheless he took the time on his drive home that night to drop in and say hello. I have thought about his kindeness every day since. Thank you @andye .

Slightly off topic - a sad story behind the man (Philip Vasyli) and his murder. He was an Australian success story
Mr Denali's got his first pair of orthodics from this person and told me what happened to the guy. About 10yrs ago he took his then orthodics to a new podiatrist and the guy brought in other staff to ohhh and ahhh over Mr Denali's OG Vasyli orthodics

Weight loss is hard as the brain wires itself to try to get back to heaviest weight. Some people are able to do by will-power alone but for many the hunger drive is analogous to how a normal weight person feels when they haven't eaten for days.

I haven't personally prescribed but Mounjaro & Wegovy/Ozempic are definitely helpful (though expensive). The weight does go back on after stopping though.

I was at a (very good) talk on the drugs last week. From a health economics point of view, surgery is probably more cost-effective. Having said that ozempic is coming off-patent before long, so there will likely be a bunch of cheaper generics available.

$350 month is recouped in terms of health benefits (less medication for obesity related health issues), food costs and overall wellbeing). Fully support @andye sentiments - most pax cannot do it via willpower alone which is unfortunately a function of our evolutionary biology (not personal weakness).

My whole life revolves around diet.. every meal, every snack must meet the required standard.
After 20 years of weight watching , I don't really need to count calories, I just know.

I would love to eat food and drink wine with gay abandon but I know the consequences and I choose to live

The consequence for minor infringements is an even tougher diet for a week.
The consequences from a major pig out like the last holiday, is that it has taken me 5 months of
heavy exercise and a very tight diet and I am still not quite back to my pre cruise weight !

That's true from my experience. My body tries to surpass the previous heaviest weight.

There's some weird stories. I was 132-133kg for many months not trying to lose weight. Doesn't matter what I ate that was the weight. I then went on a diet and I was so happy I got down to 129kgs and kept trying to lose more weight but it didn't happen. I gave up and next I know I'm 135kgs. Not 132-133kgs but 135kgs.

Just for interest's sake on mounjaro.

I started off on the lower dose, as usual; no effect that I could tell. After a month, went onto the regular dose (5 ml??) and again - nothing for the first couple of weeks; feeling a bit pi55ed off. Then bam. Felt full, didn't want to eat much. Breakfast, small lunch and very small dinner. Unfortunately by this time I was on a cruise but I'm happy to say I was able to easily resist pigging out on the dessert buffet.

But funny since I got home. The effect comes and goes. Some day or days I feel 'normal' - not full. But its relatively easy to keep the portions small. But it is working and I'm also building up the gym work; 80 mins yesterday - 50/50 weight resistance and recumbent cycling.

I have an issue with reflex. Some kind of scleroderma issue. I know I can't eat too much nor sadly drink too much because the reflux burn is horrid. And being on blood thinners I don't want to risk any erosion issues. The PPi help but not if I overeat. For me, overeating is actually a normal size meal for most people I've been facing this for a few years now and think my stomach has actually shrunk. I physically can't eat much now anyway. I just don't want it. Weight obviously not an issue.
