General EV Discussion

This is anecdotal only, but from what I’ve been told it is accident repair. Any damage whatsoever to the battery is likely to lead to a battery replacement. This can occur even with a relatively minor fender bender that might be ignored in an “equivalent” ICE car.

As an aside for EV drivers, it is well worth reporting an incident to your insurer, even if you think it is minor, in case the battery is impacted in any way.
Could be the case, but as you say it is anecdotal and having had an EV for 4 years and hung out in a few FB groups I'm not seeing that - but I'm not an insurer so I don't have their insight. I'm mindful that a lot of the "lore" around EVs at the moment comes from ignorance, with people still thinking that battery replacements are common or that EV fires are a regular occurrence despite no evidence of any of these assumptions existing. Actually being part of the community, an event which results in a HV battery replacement or fire would be BIG news as it would suggest that these myths might actually have legs and yet the truth is that it is as mundane as any other car community.

Speaking from my own anecdotal observations I'm seeing more and more big SUVs and American trucks on the road, so I guess my little sedan will be safe with it's structural underfloor battery... my glass roof on the other hand🤞

I heard that the repair costs of EVs is running at about 25% higher than other vehicles.
Don't know about EVs, but the renewal for my car just came in with a 38% increase. Seems like the RACV are assuming I won't shop around.

There's net discussion about a case of a Kia EV6 (in Canada) for which the owner was quoted more to replace the battery than the car cost new.

This is one of the main problems with EVs today. Unfortunately the technology just isn't there, at least economically, yet.

Unfortunately, the rest of it isn't there yet either. The required charging infrastructure is still in its infancy, and I often see people trying multiple attempts to charge their cars. At least we don't get such horrific chains of EVs circling endlessly at motorway servos in Europe, like we used to only a few years back. Queues still exist, but are at least orderly, and leave us normal travellers to fuel, park and eat without getting stuck.

Personally I won't rent an EV because the additional stress, and probably default charges, are way more than I want to put up with.

Then there's the silly idea that we can all charge from lampposts because 90% of households cannot charge in a garage. Yeah, right. Cables all, over, and not enough for everyone.

And then there's the required doubling of electricity charging capacity, both at every place they're charged, and in producing it, just when all developed countries are desperately fending off energy starvation.

Rarely have I ever seen such a massive collective lunacy as trying to force us all to drive EVs.

We continue to sell our daylight output for more than we pay for our peak demand so no battery here and no power bill….
We belong to a slowly shrinking group of early adopters who were offered a very generous and open ended feed in tariff.
We have only 5kva but folks right at the start who had the money to invest put up 50 kva or more in panels continue make a nice income at the expense of everyday consumers… good one alp...
Yup! The greatest shift of wealth from poor people (who couldn't afford it) to rich people (who could) in recent history. It's an absolutely disgusting aspect of the whole industry, although far from the only one.

Absolutely in Australia.
Includes DC chargers, AC type 2, as well as caravan (15A) and even wall sockets. And is well used to advise of issues with sites. And lots of people contributing locally.

That said unless going seriously outback (including the Nullabor, CQ, NT etc) you can probably rely on DC charging for which ABRP (A Better Route Planner) is better for the planning element.

You select your car, plug in destination and it will calculate the fastest route.

Tesla's will do similar in their app/ in car map, but only using Tesla chargers.

Yep think it's happening for all forms of insurance. Got to shop around.. lazy tax is real.

Why should EV uptake be incentivised?.
I ask the question because all ev owners i speak to say the cost of operating and maintaining the vehicle is better than an ICE car. If it is so compelling why subsidise it?

Quite a few state Govt subsidies end 31-Dec.
Still benefits from Fed Govt via higher LCT.

Reality though is a lot of external costs of combustion vehicles end up with the Govt via the health system, so encouraging EVs is a net positive

(Why we still give subsidies to diesel vehicles is another matter)

I'm now 3.5yrs into my Tesla 3 experience... (Only 19,500km though)

Never run out of EV juice (have pushed it a few times including the uphill Hollydene to Dubbo 265km which is a stretch in my 2020 3Sr+, not for a new Tesla 3/Y today)
Never queued more than 5 min (and that was at a Chargefox charger at Barnwartha nr Albury)
Spent $10 on servicing (for some windscreen cleaner and deionised Water) .. tyres still have plenty.

And I don't have charging at home, mostly charged at shopping centres, or more recently my gym.. still trying to get my complex strata on board.

Do not miss the gas station experience, and can't see I'd ever go back, and last car was an Alfa Romeo.

I think the really big issue with EV's is resale value and buying used.

Not something I'll be touching in my lifetime. Neither will my son who has just bought a new RAM and his wife has a large VW SUV. Not many charging stations near where they live in rural NSW.

I had a really bad experience with a rented Polestar 2 in the UK and that has put me off for life (but we're not talking of a huge amount of time here).

Hopefully I'll be able to drive (anything) soon, after fracturing my skull and having a bleed on the brain a little while ago.

Just a few fun facts...

Sure there is a community benefit. However I still don't understand why EV drivers who recognise and appreciate this benefit actually need an incentive?. Additionally I suggest that the EV uptake would not be significantly impacted by a lack of incentives. Im of the opinion that the incentives would have been better spent on charging infrastructure

Do not miss the gas station experience
Still use it for the Air and windscreen squeegee and the ride on mower petrol. Its fun turning up in an EV and filling up the Jerry cans

What was the wait time?

👍
And Tesla wannabes are complaining they are waiting 1-2monthd🤣
But bear in mind I did order 2 years b4 Ford Australia even confirmed it would be offered in Australia - so real time from announcement of ranging was around 8mths from memory - wait time from actual acceptance of official orders about 4 to 5mths I think
