General Discussion/Q&A on Coronavirus (COVID-19)

It's the iceberg effect.. It's easy to see a few clumps of ice here and there and persuade ones self that it's all ok.
A look under the surface tells a completely different tale.

Some services have already enacted business continuity plans to ensure staff are less likely to contract the virus. In one instance I am aware of the service staff have been told to cancel any arrangements to attend events and the organisation will reimburse the lost $, also to stay at home and to not have anyone except household members in the house. The floor this team works on has been isolated from other staff - they aren’t exactly an essential service but there would be flow on consequences to the general public if their service shut down.

I guess I will hear some put downs because this is not "Official government or medical professional advice".. but it seems interesting and quite plausible reasoning

Coronavirus: Why You Must Act Now

No, not from me. It is exactly the type of well written and well reasoned logic that I think is important for discussion at present.

It also why for a while now that I have been posting that I think the USA is heading for an Italy Mark 2 situation, unless they dramatically clamp down hard now, as they have been so very slow to act in truly meaningful ways, and their testing stuff up gave people a false view of their status.

Given that VA has confirmed a female cabin crew member diagnosed with the virus had contact with passengers, why won't it publicly state what flights she was on and what dates, at least for five days prior to when she was diagnosed?

Not great that the airline is leaving it to State Health Departments to track down what might be in the low thousands of passengers, depending on the woman's roster.

Publicising the flight numbers wouldn't necessarily jeopardise her 'privacy', and since it's a major public health issue, the latter ought be the priority.

Advice from Chief Medical Officer seems to be that 'close contact' for '15 minutes or more' is one of the activities that may lead to contracting the virus. How this flight attendant got the virus is not explained (not that one expects it to be, at least not publicly.)

See the ABC website for its story.

Maybe a dumb question but if Covid-19 is a virus how do anti-bacterial wipes and sanitizer help? Surely what is needed is an anti-viral wipe or gel?

Not dumb at all, there is somewhere a presentation about why washing with soap is more effective than sanitiser which addresses this question. Unfortunately there has been so much rubbish I'm not sure where I saw this.

I don't get the 500 limit though. (And it's only advisory)
People will just go to smaller places like cinema or the local football.

One infected person will infect just as many people in a 200-seat cinema or 200-person capacity bar/club, as at a 20k seater football game
(Probably more at the bar actually)

And it seemingly doesn't include schools.
Kids are going to be a major transmission vector - often asymptomatic it seems, and less likely to practice appropriate hand hygiene and not touching face

From what I've read, the best solution is a minimum of 20 seconds of constant washing of hands with the cheapest bar soap you can buy is sufficient. Second best is an alcohol based hand sanitiser with 60% or more alcohol. Anti bacterial hand soap will help prevent getting the runs from faecal bacteria etc but do nothing extra over standard soap for COVID.

Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, the Frequent Flyer Concierge team at Frequent Flyer Concierge will help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

They need to be much more directive than that for it to have any effect. That’s pretty much useless advice.

IMO, this would be a deliberate measure to limit the exposure to all sorts of businesses - not just insurance industry.

Anybody here over Coronavirus?

Just looking at ABC news online and the first 10 stories are all coronavirus related. Yes, all 10.

And above that lot, a banner marked "see our full coronavirus coverage"

FFS. Can I see the full coverage of everything else???

They explained it just now as being recognised as some kind of "tipping" point. I dunno!

Agree, stupid comment.
