General COVID-19 Vaccine Discussion

Not with Omicron. Too contagious.
I don’t see how the two are exclusive? Vaccinations help reduce severity, keep hospital beds free. If you’ve had covid you’re less likely to get it again for a few months. Both of those things are going to flatten the curve in terms of deaths, hospitalisations and limiting transmission.

We’re virtually 100% vaccinated. How much more can we do? This is now it. As mild as a cold, a mortality rate of less than 0.1% (0.03% in WA which released it with a higher vaccination rate). Amazing that people are still aspiring for “covid zero”.

There fixed it for you. You haven't been reading all the links i have posted. One study showed the effectiveness after infection although waning was still significant at 20 months way longer than any vaccine.. But here's another one with the important bit.
Among persons who had a prior COVID-19 infection before vaccination, a lower incidence of breakthrough infections was also observed compared to COVID-19 naïve persons (3.2 vs 12.0 per 100 person years).
.. those who had a prior COVID-19 infection were less likely to have symptoms (odds ratio 0.38 for ≥ 1 symptom vs no symptoms, 95% CI 0.36–0.40) than COVID-19-naïve individuals.

So if vaccinated and had had Covid a quarter the rate of re infections and a third the rate of symptomatic infection.

I don’t see that as being inconsistent. If you are vaccinated and get covid, less likely to end up in hospital. Plus, after recovery less likely to get it again. Helps to flatten the curve, build herd immunity and break the cycle.

There’s a difference between ‘covid zero’ and simply not wanting to get covid. I don’t want to get the flu either.

You seem to switch between caring about the population as a whole and yourself.

For interests sake, let’s rewind 3 years. What we’re you doing on a daily basis in regards to influenza prevention? It feels like a long time ago and I can’t really recall, but we’re you making the same posts here? Genuinely can’t remember.

flatten the curve

I think we’re done with the catch phrases.

Where are the general health messages supporting overall better health outcomes.
Regular exercise and a vitamin D boost (if not a naturist) will do a lot to reduce adverse events (of many sorts)
I would hope the above would also reduce influenza infections "sticking".
I think I might be on a trip with too much wandering
Fred
PS I could have mentioned a few more known (and documented) OTC anti-virals

An early study I saw reported in the news a while back indicated that for an omicron targeted vaccine to be significantly more effective than taking more of the original vaccine you may need two doses of it with the first dose priming the immune system for the second. If that proves correct then with an omicron targeted vaccine we’d still be trying to catch up and lagging too far behind mutations to make herd immunity at all likely in the near future.

Yes here are results re decreasing transmission after a 4th dose of an mRNA vaccine. Antibody levels were back to third dose levels but at 1 month efficacy at preventing infection were 30% with Pfizer and 11% with Moderna. And note the adverse reaction levels.

Which is why at the moment ATAGI is crazy. I have repeatedly said for the young flu is a more deadly virus than Covid. Yet here we are urging parents to get their young children vaccinated when there is little risk and the vaccine results in those 5-11 are pathetic.
The vaccine's efficacy against infection among those children declined to 12% at the end of January from 68% in mid-December compared to kids who did not get vaccinated, according the study, which has not yet been peer reviewed.
For those aged 12 to 17, the vaccine's protection against infection fell to 51% in late January from 66% in mid-December.
The vaccine was around 48% effective in keeping the younger age group out of the hospital, with 73% efficacy against hospitalization among adolescents last month, the data showed. That was down from effectiveness of 100% and 85% against hospitalization for the two age groups as of mid-December.
So virtually no protection from infection after 1 month.
Rather than a capaign to get younger folk to get the Covid vaccine it should be the Flu vaccine NOW. Flu cases are rising.

The longer and more fervently that SA Health is promoting vaccination for 5+ and the continued requirement now for only schoolchildren to have to wear masks (excluding of course the usual medical settings) it's just as well I don't have children at school because it seems that we are using kids to prevent issues of older people. The young kids have paid a high enough price.

Back to the preventative methods (apparently for both influenza and corona-virus infections)
The two datasets provide strong evidence that low D3 is a predictor rather than a side effect of the infection.

A predictor NOT a side effect

Unfortunately it doesn't mean that normaling vitamin D will decrease mortality. There are many predictors of mortality with covid.

OTOH if you do not "get it", then "mortality with covid" would not seem to apply?
Back to my corner and restricted wandering

Just why SA Health? In SA, 93.5% of people over 12 have had their second vaccination. Tonight, they've just put out a Facebook update informing people that the second dose of an MRNA vaccine should be given at 8 weeks and not 3 weeks because a longer period improves the immune response. Needless to say the comment posts are not exactly complimentary. No wonder people have just tuned out. 🐎
