I am looking at booking 2 return business class seats to LA from Sydney with FF points at the end of 2015. Direct flights to LA with Qantas do not have any business seats available. Other options are flying Oneworld either via Hong Kong or Dubai with only one leg in business! Of course this means that I need to use a lot more FF points than if it was straight direct return flights out of Sydney! Is there something I am doing wrong with booking the flights? Any help would be appreciated.

It used to be easy (or less difficult) to find business class availability via Brisbane, but now they seem to be releasing less award sets on this route as well.

Earlier today I could see at least 7 U class seats transpacific MEL to LAX for 26th November. (They became available at 11am MEL time today.)

Now 6 ... QF11 QF93 QF17 ...

Ok, I'll keep checking each day to see what is available.

I recently booked MEL-LAX-MEL as a QF J award for late October / early November 2015. You just need to be quick and generally they're only available midweek. I find Thursdays best for leaving MEL and Sundays for the return.

Best thing for you to do would be to sign up with Expert Flyer & set a flight alert for a "U" class award seat in Business.

You need to be ready to pounce when you get notification as it's up for grabs by anyone.

Thanks Oz will have a look at Expert Flyer.

If you get really stuck on your chosen dates you could try SYD-LAX via NAN on FJ. Not quite QF but the stopover in NAN is only 3 hours and it's better than QF Y.
