If QF decided to upgrade people based on hair colour, there would be not grounds to complain. Getting involuntary upgrades is not part of any specified benefit of status.

Hair colour may be a good option for me. I could pass for anything from brown to grey or "distinguished blonde" depending on how long since I had a cut & colour :p .

It used to be an 'unspecified' benefit similar to the availability of T class or no re-validation fees on award bookings for elites.

Back when Gold was top tier, I used to get an invol. upgrade approx. one in every three full economy fare flights.

When this practice was discontinued, letters were sent out to all Golds indicating these "Complimentary" upgrades would no longer be available, but, rest assured, we would be first in line should any "Operational" upgrades be necessary.

I like the idea for a buy any seat program however, being the wanker platinum that I am, I would also like to see x number of seats on any flight dedicated to each class of FF up until say 30min's of departure. Fare class should not matter using this pecking order then at the 30 min mark, first in best dressed. That levels the playing field for all - xx_ seats for Platinum, XX for Gold and X for Silver.
I agree with that. I don't want the 'better availability of award seat' benefit of being a platinum eroded - I have been a beneficiary of this benefit quite a bit lately.

If Qantas revamps the FF scheme, all I can hope is that premium customers don't get treated any worse than what they do now. A preimum customer is not always the F or J seated customer either.

I agree! I qualified for platinum through flying almost exclusively in economy (or was it totally exclusively?), but I do fly rather frequently.
