Perth-Melbourne flight prices are a real fright today to get to MEL by Friday late afternoon.
I guess it is supply and demand but one way Friday morning ranges from $700 plus to $2300 odd on Qantas this morning.

Probably cheaper and easier to go via Sin:idea:

Yes you are correct kpc. When the West Coast Eagles made it to the finals that is what Perth supporters had to do 5 years ago.

If I was a football fan (and a Freo one at that), I would look at travelling on Wed or Thursday. If you love your team so much, then surely you'll be prepared to take some additional leave?

Getting in to Melbourne with only a few hours to spare doesn't give you many options if something goes wrong (Mechanical issues, general delay). You've only go to see what happened to the Hawthorn supporters yesterday when the flew over to watch Hawthorn v Freo. A delay on QF meant that they missed the first quarter.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Just a sign that all the red-e-deals and super-saver fares have been snapped up.

Sydney option may vanish because Sydney Swans are in the lead . Melbourne may have their Silverware go to an interstate cabinet.

Choices now would be PER- Brisbane -MEL
PER-SIN-MEL
PER-ADL-MEL

Probably shouldn't admit I'm a Hawks supporter after yesterday's insipid effort but flew J* to the 2008 GF. Spent $2K (flight + GF Package) all up and was in Melbourne for less than 24 hrs. The airlines are smart enough to know when demand will be on and will jack their prices accordingly.

I don't know that they jack their prices up - it's just they are more likely to sell out of the cheap seats quickly.

I have the strangest feeling that Qantas economic model does not include the dockers or the Eagles.

As mentioned by oz_mark, the cheaper fares have probably just all sold out...

It may not specifically include the dockers, but I wouldn't be surprised if yield management has mechanisms to restrict the number of seats available at lower fares in response sudden increases in demand. Maybe I'm getting way to cynical :D

Agreed, I don't think munitalp is giving Qantas' yield management much credit.

I agree, its got nothing to do with a specific target and everything to do with supply and demand at short notice, anyone who has had to get a fare within a week would have seen it before and school holidays have started so that would not be helping.

Yes I agree that Qantas are just experiencing high sales on the Thursday and Friday for this Friday night match.
It is a bit of a shock to have to pay what I would call "list price" for a 3.5 hour / 4.5 hour return flight PER-MEL-PER for $1473.
We picked up 3 of 4 tickets on points the day before the decider game so it is only one ticket that was a cash only thingy.

Wonder if they'll load some extra flights on...?
If the demand is there, and I'm sure it will be then I'm sure they will add the extra flights. Having said that I'm sure they will make sure that all are as full as possible to get the maximum revenue value.

Don't underestimate Qantas' YM - it's not a lot of effort for them to zero out or otherwise minimise O, E, Q & N availabilit (or even S, V, L and M)

A friend of mine is trying to give away two tickets to Geelong vs Freo, so if anyone wants them send me a PM.
