Re: QF32 388 - emergency landing in SIN after Engine failure

The ABC story was excellent. Very interesting and lots of detail. Recommended viewing.

I couldn't believe the flight had a Check Captain checking a trainee Check Captain who was checking the Captain!

What an amazing tech crew.

Very sobering viewing. It is reassuring to see the manner in which it was handled by the Qantas crew on the scene and at other locations as they monitored the events.

Re: QF32 388 - emergency landing in SIN after Engine failure

was anybody able to watch this OS on either the iview site or an the Four Corners VOD site...?

What a fantastic crew, amazing they managed to get the jet down... hydraulic failure usually leads to disaster....

Bit of a low blow from the check captain sliding in the line about the huge experience the First Officer being barely enough and if it was a "low hours" First Officer they would have been ****ed. That comment certainly wouldn't have anything to do with negotiations between Qantas and a certain union now, would it?

And how about Captain Old-mate and his "the fire trucks were right down the other end of the runway and we had to get close to them as fast as we could" about the fast landing? What a champion! Such a natural in front of the camera! He should have been worked into the John Travolta safety video somehow. Like when JT says "no one I'd rather have at the controls than a Qantas pilot" old-mate could wander in and say something like "Well thanks, John. Here at Qantas we... blah blah... safety blah blah... training blah blah... but we need our passengers to do a bit of training too! Please pay attention as the team demonstrates... blah blah."

Man, I could seriously get a job writing cheesy safety videos.

Just stumbeled upon it by acident, a little tear came to my eye after a bit. Seeing the way Qantas handled the situation, reminds me of why I always fly them... I doubt Virgin will ever be able to match what Qantas have.

Saying that as a Web Check for my DJ flight SYD tommorow....

I missed about 10 minutes, but it was gripping viewing. Interesting that Changi allowed a lot of detail of the landing too.

Seeing how close it all came to .... reminds me of something attributed to the NTSB in the US, that in all aviation crashes there are 10+ individual acts or omissions that cause a crash, and catching even 1 or 2 of them could prevent them. Clearly the crew were well trained and kept their nerve.

Well worth watching.

If you seriously think that then I believe that you do not really understand the work loads inolved in this type of situation. I actually think it was one of the better comments made during the show.

You might be interes know that Richard has a brother (also a pilot) whose name is 'Champion'. So not a bad comment really. :D

Oh I totally understand that pilots with more experience are in general better/safer. This point could have been made without the reference to "low hours" = crash for sure. I mean if it's true that a First Officer with any less experience would have meant a crash in this situation then what are we supposed to think about the chances of an ordinary three-person crew? This First Officer's experience was "stretched to the limit" (or words to that effect) when he had two check captains looking over his shoulder! If that's true then I'm never flying domestic ever again - all those planes only have two pilots!

I maintain that it was a cheap shot.
