If anyone here has flown on Premium Economy, would like to know whether the food service in this class is the same as the barely edible slop served in steerage, or is it intermediate in quality between Economy and Business?

Does it earn Economy FF points or is there a small loading?

Thinking of giving this class a try next time I go to Hong Kong......

I believe:
  • You get the standard Business class catering.
  • 10% COS bonus QFF points

The marketing read more like it was a cut above economy, but not business class. More akin to a domestic business meal.

If it's anything like NZ Y+ its like the domestic J meal on china and better than Y meals.

On BA Y+ its the same old slops that you get back in cattle.

I am sure I read that it was the J meal in Y+ rather than some intermediate step. One of teh distinctions between BA and QF Y+ was that BA is basically whY with more pitch (and inseat power) whereas on QF Y+ is J without the pitch and skybed (or lounge access).

Mind you if it J food then youwill have to suffer teh Neil Perry inspired dish...

In international J the marketing spile is Neil Perry designed. In Premium economy it is Neil Perry inspired. If it is the J meal, then all the better. Maybe the wines aren't so good :)

I can tell you all that it is definitely not a J class meal that they serve in Y+ (recently been there)

Actually, its a bit deceptive cause it looked a lot better that the pigs swill that Y gets you but it sure did taste the same!

I usually travel J on all flights 3hrs and above but tried a Y+ on my last trip to Honkers (thought I'd save my company some money)

All I can say is that it's way better than zoo class but no way near J either both in terms of comfort and food.

Not sure that its worth the extra money that Y+ costs you.

Cheers

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Now here is an interesting question - if given the option I would probably plump for two trips to HK in whY+ than one in J. I often combine multiple projects when I go to HK so would be more than happy to split the projects - given that up is a day flight anyway and I am sure I could get a day flight home.

As a comparison

Y+ 2x 2570 = $5,140 and earns 38,631 AA miles (and the same on QF assumng a OWE and getting a 10% cabin bonus)

J = 6,415 and earns 20,695 miles

Best not to suggest it though as they will say still fly Y+ but combine the projects...

Y+ food is and isn't J class food

It is the same meal type as J class domestically and across the tasman.

It is not plated though like longhaul J meals.

Qantas is proud to announce a new level of service known as Wombat Class*.
While seats and catering have been removed, Wombat Class allows flexibility and the ultimate in economy. Travel from Sydney to London for only $5 return (plus $995 taxes and surcharges).
Please note that travel in Wombat Class does not qualify for Frequent Flyer Points nor are they eligible for upgrades.
Redeem flights in Wombat Class for 30% less points than in regular economy!

Just for completeness....

On NZ the catering in Y+ is.. to coin a phrase "C-".. and not so minus at that...
(I flew in both classes recently so hopefully this is reasonably up to date!)

Dinner: Same starter... three main choices instead of 4.. one dessert offered rather than a choice... Same Cheese selection

Breakfast: Same as C

IIRC the starter in Y+ is served separately... as is the cheese selection.. I think the duff might have come with the main.... presentation not up to c standards - fair enough...

I've enjoyed the meals in Y+ every time...

Example: Y+ Starter LAX-AKL:

"Citrus cured New Zealand Salmon with butter lettuce salad, persimmon, walnut croutons, parmesan and pomegranate syrup, walnit oil and sherry vinaigrette." (It was goood too.)

Now I'm hungry.......

P.S. NZ Y+ SYD-(AKL)-HKG is about AUD$2600 when purchased with reasonable notice... the TT segments are in Y however.... Y+ has been a real hit for NZ.. it will be interesting to see if the same happens for QF (I expect it will)
