Thanks everyone. Just to clarify: late check out of HK hotel at 1800; CX flight due to depart @ 2345; dilema-do I leave bags at hotel and eat in Wanchai/Causeway Bay or go to airport and partake of offerings in CX lounges? Second option is FREE! But is it worth it?

subharpoon,

I would probably do a bit of both. I guess it depends upon how much you like HK and if you have had enough or seek more :!:

+1, get rid of the bags at the downtown checkin and then your free to do as you please.

+2 ... get rid of your bags at Central Station using the Airport Express ITCI (In Town Check-in) service and catch the train later at your convenience.

Note that the ITCI can be used up to 48 hours before your flight as you are on CX.

Hi Mal,
I was bringing to their attention that said kebabs are available on the far left side of the long bar, under a bain marie or whatever you call it.

I was commenting on how tasty they were :) They were pretty nice.

Which date are you flying out? I might be around HKG airport if it's soon.

Slightly off topic (I didn't think it was thread-worthy) which lounges can I access using my Qantas Club Card (I'm only Silver) with the late night QF flight back to Perth in a few weeks time?

QF only I am afraid.

Hi Mal,
Not till 20th June. Just building up an appetite!!:p

It is interesting that the Pier/Wing food is so harshly rated. It has been a while since I was in an international J lounge (well there was the WLG lounge) but I don't recall the food being much cop in the J lounge any of the following:

All US Admirals Club
NRT - AA/CX/QF average to poor
SYD- QF poor
HKG - QF - poor
LGW - BA - poor to non-existent
SIN - QF/BA - average

The only places I have found to have decent food in the lounge are in the int'l F lounges: NRT/HHKG/SYD and I don't particularly rate the food at the BA T5 F lounge

My memory is fading. My father and I were in the Wing/Pier late at night back in September waiting for the QF flight HKG-PER and from memory had dinner and the food on offer at that time of the night in the business lounge was quite good.

Thought as much but thanks for the confirmation.
There is nothing wrong with either of the refurbished QF lounges in HKG. In fact unless you are looking for something specific there is not a lot of difference between the Wing/Pier or the QF lounge.

Lounges are, and will always be, much of a muchness. The hype that continues to be built up on AFF about some lounges is not warranted....

Until recently there was significant difference between the HKG QF lounge and the CX offerings, the cabanas, whiskey bar, F restaurant and even the availability of showers, by no means were they much of a muchness in the past unless you were just looking for a seat and a drink!

Again you are mentioning something specific about a particular lounge and most people would not worry about those differences. Most people I have observed just want a place to sit (and have quick nap if tired), something to eat, drink and use internet facilities. Cabanas? Whiskey bars? Yeah some people may go for it.

Since the refurbishments the QF lounges are as good as Wing/Pier in most respects and more than adequate for most people.

I cannot comment on the new lounges as I have not been there but from about 6 months after the airport opened until recently there was no way you could say much of a muchness between QF and CX, even for people looking for just a seat, most of the time you could not get one in the evening in the QF J or F lounge and then you had to play the shower lottery.

Heck QF did not even have showers in the F section so how can you say much of a muchness, as a recently appointed WP by comparison you probably would not have experienced the shower chaos in HKG but it was one of the differences that made the Wing look like heaven for those of us who had access to it in either J or F versions.

QF lounges have come a long way since I was a WP, including those at HKG, as have airports themselves, is the hype still valid for the CX lounges, probably not, but then again I have not seen too much recent hype!

I was never able to find the old QF lounge in HKG so cannot comment. Shower is not that important to me. I am not one the minority that needs to run off the aircraft to have a shower in between flights. Hardly ever need a shower before a flight as I have had one in the hotel before I checked out or at home before leaving for the airport.

Almost everyone on this board constantly recommends "You must visit the Wing/Pier" when in HKG. I have lost count of the number of times I have visited the Wing/Pier and let me tell you the novelty has worn off and the lounges themselves are nothing special. Sure the F restaurant maybe nice, and some may like dim sum or noodle soup but for me the Wing/Pier is no different to any Business Lounge/F lounge in Asia. That is I keep saying the lounges are much of a muchness.

And by the way don't get me wrong most times it is much better being in a lounge than being out in the terminal but for me lounges are much of a muchness and I do not get too excited about visiting any particular lounge even the F lounge in SYD.

The new HKG QF F lounge used to make up both the old QF F and old QF J lounges. One walked through the J lounge to access the F lounge. The showers were shared.

Hi Mal,
Not till 20th June. Just building up an appetite!!:p

Going to be a big appetite by then!

Check later and see if any WP is going to be around. There is a huge difference between the F and J lounges dining wise.

My earlier criticism of the brekkie food in the F lounge may have been incorrect. Having had lunch and dinner there since then, the buffet is well stocked, food is yum and my plates have been full.

Currently in the F (pier) lounge, but as my flight is leaving soon I won't get a chance to pop into the J lounge to see what the food is like.

I was never able to find it, mainly due to poor signage and probably never looked hard enough, as I was always under the impression it was somewhere around gates 36-40. Now I know where it is I will be using the QF lounge more often. I prefer bottled beer to canned beer anyway and I am not a fan of dim sum. Will need to compare the differences between the F restaurant in the Wing/Pier as opposed to what the QF lounge will offer but as most of my transits in HKG are from business class flights I am not that hungry.

I am due to be visiting HKG airport again on June 12th, June 13th and June 19th so we will miss one another.

I’ve always loved getting a hot bowl of noodle soup in the J lounge, however not looked around much or seen much else, though as has been mentioned, there are other offerings. When in Rome…?

I do think the noodle bar closes at some point though. I used to frequently take the late night flight to BNE out of HKG and they’d close up shop before I left. Things may have changed though.
