Flights you couldn't get on Qantas

Being trapped in Perth ... my spend has moved to Cathay and to-date it has been about $32K in 2 years that QF has lost..... IMO QF should at least have business class flights to Bali.....

I disagree about the flights to DPS, the 320 is suffice.

Qantas model appears to be lets fly to a hub and offload to another airline.

Emirates are the smart ones, how did they get the ability to fly from Adelaide to say Auckland, shouldn't this route be owned by Australian and NZ airlines?

Put this in the calender, with Emirates business model and desire they will soon by flying Perth - Newman or any other Qantas link routes.... not just in Australia but other counties worldwide

I highly doubt EK will fly the PER-ZNE just because.

For many years other airlines have been allowed to do trans Tasman flights as tags. Those that have (apart from Emirates) at some point, and some who still do, include Air China, China Airlines, Thai, LAN, Aerolineas Argentinas, amongst others. Like QF has at different times flown (and sold) flights between Singapore and LHR, BKK, HKG, CDG, FRA, BOM and perhaps others. At the moment it only does DXB-LHR but it can still sell flights out of Singapore to a range of destinations in Europe, under a QF code on EK operated flights.

Emirates probably could fly to Newman (if it helped the airport expand and get customs and immigration facilities). But it wouldn't have the permission to sell flights between Perth and Newman though.

Just some of the destinations people I know and myself would fly to on QF should the option be available to (and I am based in Sydney - must be 100x worse for Melbourne and Brisbane, and obviously infinitely worse for Adelaide/Perth);

INTERNATIONAL
Beijing (easier to just fly CX via HKG)
Guangzhou (QF codeshare available, but often much more expensive than CZ)
Anywhere in China other than Shanghai (better to connect on CX via HKG than MU via PVG)
Anywhere in Japan other than Tokyo
Seoul (Can use QF codeshare, but CX/JL is superior)
San Francisco (QF is lucky here, most I know will go via LAX over flying UA)
Frankfurt (EK flight time doesn't work, arrives 9am. Now CX/SQ preferred)
Paris (Same as above).
Anywhere in India (QF/9W codeshare is rubbish with status benefits not honoured, and often more expensive)

DOMESTIC
Gold Coast (too few flights compared to VA/JQ)
Cairns (no evening flight anymore, unlike VA and JQ)
Uluru (no QF)

Most of the list above could be fixed quite easily, if QF invested in EK style partnerships with airlines such as CX and 9W

Sydney to Frankfurt
Canberra to Auckland
Sydney to San Francisco

So Qantas is dumb for flying hub but Emirates are cleaver, despite their model being, umm hub. Of course Emirates only has one hub city to serve, which of course is one flight away from everywhere in the world except basically the Pacific. Qantas on the other hand are expected to fly point to point from every city in Australia to every possible city, well in Asia at least. Well going by what is written here you could assume that.

Now when are my Canberra to Ho Chi Minh city flights going to start? I mean to say there are lots of Vietnamese in Canberra, so it should work shouldn't it? None of this narrow body stuff either, I want, I want, I want, I want. Bla bla Qantas are bad, Qantas are evil etc etc

Since when did EK fly ADL-AKL non-stop? I've just done some dummy bookings on various and all the flights are code shared with QF to MEL / SYD / BNE. Surprisingly (although timing may explain it) the tasman flight is also on code share, not even EK metal.

I don't believe they have flown that route.

That is not quite what he was saying. Took me several reads to get it.

Two points Australia and NZ have an open skies agreement so the routes are open to who ever. The only constraints are on monopolisation of routes and anti competitive behaviour.

As for you other comment, clearly facetious, but in theory there is nothing stopping Emirates setting up shop and operating domestic flights. I meant to say their co UAE airline basically does that too, though the aircraft are painted as Vigin Australia

o, to sit in the big seat at Qantas... what would you do first?

get rid of the 717 ......

MEL - OOL. Fly it 6 - 8 times a year in J. Can't go QF so go VA and as a spinoff they get most of the rest of my domestic flights too. Same goes for rest of my family now. Between us something like 70 domestic legs last year that went to VA. It's called the snowball effect! QF have never cared about the small fish, that's part of the reason why they are doing so well

Well, from Perth at least, no business class, no IFE and bussing to and from the gate.

Wow, haven't we become spoilt. Is there really a need for IFE on the regional 717's.

Bussing to and fro the gates isn't something that is a specific 717 fault as I have had the bus treatment on the 737's as well.
