Background to this thread
We have noticed an increase in the posting of questions about seat availability on specific flights. These are all valid questions and we all appreciate the efforts our members go to to provide answers.

The only drawback is that our forums can become "cluttered" with specific questions about availability on specific flights. This tends to reduce the overall usability of our site.
We have therefore created this new consolidated thread where you can ask questions about seat availability on specific flights. Hopefully, this will reduce clutter and improve useability.

Guidelines for posting in this thread
Please post questions about availability of specific flights or upgrade probability in this new consolidated thread. Be sure to include the airline, flight number, date, origin and destination and any other relevant detail.

When answering questions, please include the original question. This will assist in readability and management of the thread.

See this thread for hints on how to read loadings:


If looking for, say Qantas points upgrades, look for A class for First, mid to high D or any I class for Business and any R for Premium Economy.

Look for the most expensive category of the cabin YOU are currently booked in as being sold out e.g. J0 to first, W0 to Business & Y0 to PE for increased op-up chances. Also, look for availability on the discount premium buckets (A, P, I, D, U, T & Z inventories).

Conversely, look for high numbers in the discount economy buckets (N, O, Q, E & X inventories) for reduced op-up chances.

Seat maps can be a VERY rough guide but note that just because a seat is not showing as allocated does not mean that seat hasn't been sold. Not everyone pre-selects seats.

Yesterday I had a flight on an A332. Forty-five minutes from departure EF was showing four empty seats and J3 C3 D3 I0. I asked for a points upgrade and was told the plane was full. And this was in the Chairmans lounge. Twenty minutes from departure there were two empty seats. I enquired again, this time at the Qantas Club, and was again told the plane was full. Sitting on the plane 10 minutes from departure EF showed J1 C1 D1 I0 and one seat unoccupied.

Firstly, what am I missing?

Secondly, does anyone think that the possibility of ODUs is impacted both by your status and your PCV (perceived commercial value), rather than what's actually available? In my experience every time I seek a points upgrade I'm asked for my boarding pass. Certainly that's the logical way for the agent to bring up your flight but I wonder if a passenger simply asked if a points upgrade was available on a particular flight without providing a boarding pass would find themselves having to provide it before the agent would check. To me that makes me wonder that they're are other factors, rather than just empty seats, available.

Having seen a lot of this in recent times I can give a little insight into what causes discrepancy in numbers.

Firstly expertflyer is not always accurate. It doesn't take into consideration factors like over booking and staff travel as the number it shows is what is available for sale and not what is available for other purposes

Each ticket type had a priority level attached to it where 1 is most important and 100 is least important. Anyone above your priority can bump you off. Confirmed paying pax are around priority 10.

Staff dead heading for duty travel might be around priority 8 with super senior governments and airline ceo, national emergencies, the queen ect higher again.

In a simple example there may be dead heading staff coming from multiple ports and as they check in the seat numbers go down as they were for sale but internally already allocated.

The only way to know true numbers would be to have access to that airlines computers.
