Mildly interesting find, was looking at EK reward flights via qantas and found a result where first class was literally cheaper than business. Is this common or a rarity? PER-DXB-VIE is the routing for context.

First looks correct, but business should be 143k points. If you click through on the business fare, is it actually classic plus or have a connection more than 24hrs?

Often see things like this, if you click on the business it'll show one leg in first. The increase pricing is it trying to add a first and business together whereas the first all the way through is a lower number of points.

Ah, clicked into it and this is accurate - PER-DXB is in first and then DXB-VIE is J for the J reward flight, and for some reason this is priced higher than first all the way through.

Change in travel class can create a new "trip", so points cost is calculated as two separate one ways and added together. F cost for PER-DXB and J cost for DXB-VIE.

With the F all the way on same carrier, points cost is based on one trip, being the distance PER-xDXB-VIE.

I had something like this happen to me late last year where on the same flight it was cheaper to fly in J than in Y. Even better it ended up being the widebody so I had the most useless lay flat seat for an hour and a half flight to Sydney.
