Simple one:
How often do they come up in general? How many on each flight? How long in advance do you need to book them? Any other tips etc?

Be flexible with your travel plans and book as soon as the flights are released. From what I have seen there isn't availability on Fri, Sat, Sun, Mon, but you can see availability Tue, Wed, Thur. I have also seen greater availability MEL - LAX.
I booked a FASA for later in the year and was wanting SYD - LAX, but ended up MEL - LAX. If seat is available as a classic award make sure to check ASA as well.

Thanks for the tips guys. Had a look and you're right, from Melb seems to come up more often so that is definitely an option. Looking at some time mid-next year so unable to book yet anyway but just wanting to get an idea before I have to pounce.

Generally speaking, how far in advance are seats released or available for booking?

Are the classic award seats releases as soon as a particular day becomes available to book (353 days prior) or could it be that there might be no award seats initially but one may be released closer to departure date?

There have been quite a few classic F awards on the MEL-LAX-MEL route released recently, in fact, more than I have ever seen. However that may be due to being Platinum and seeing more availability than previously.

I have found that the business and economy awards are released at 350ish days out and then F awards seem to come about a week later. There are generally 2 F awards on 3-4 days of each week released.

I have never seen any awards released closer to the date, but if people cancel the flights then they go back in the pool. Best to check every day and cross your fingers.

Where they exist they become available a midnight UTC - that's 11am Sydney time during Summer and 10am in winter.

E/F used to have a 'feature' that allowed on to query a few days more than than that 353 days on Qantas - award available was apparent then (even though it could not be booked).

Does anyone know how far in advance they are released as AA awards? The same as QF?

AFAIK it is 331 days out, and that 22 days difference can really bugger up availability. It is my single biggest gripe about QF award seat availability :evil:
