Reading Russ' coughroach thread reminded me of a pet peeve of mine. Yes it is the open salt bowl.

I'm surprised it has not been picked up on here given the number of part time lawyers. :p

It is not even the potential health aspect that annoys me, I grew up in an age where eating dirt as a child was a rite of passage :p, I just strongly prefer a salt shaker or grinder to allow the even distribution of salt on my meal.

The photo is from my last F lounge visit, prior to me taking any salt. Fortunately I wasn't traumatised and have been able to carry on my life as normal, well, when I say normal I mean as normal as is possible for the deeply flawed individual I am. :p (...and my therapist has been a massive help......although not necessarily with this. :p )

I hate open salt bowls unless there's evidence of them being refreshed every time. I won't use them.

There's a reason salt used to be (and still is) used to preserve food. Not a very hospitable environment for bacteria.

To be honest I haven't given a thought to the open salt dishes but I think you are absolutely right there.

If I were to worry too much about people's fingers touching everything I eat I'd be a size zero !!
Actually that's not a bad idea, might try it ;)

The main reason I stopped eating the peanuts they offered in the beer bars in Thailand in the similar bowls as this one.

I hate people touching food with their fingers and I hate it when people dip their own cutlery into communal foods.

What about breathing some-one else's exhaled air? I dare say more bugs in that lot.

I reckon the more bugs we share at low doses, the better off we all are. Witness the current 'epidemic' of allergies etc from our totally scrubbed and clean kids.

I had believed the small salt bowls were supposed to be replaced after each guest finishes and leaves the table - irrespective of whether they had been used or not.

Consider the possible consequences of a simple incompletely contained sneeze or cough ...

Lucky champagne is served in glass then.

I too thought it strange that the were never changed unless empty. I found the salt too large to be effective in flavouring the food, yes I do crush it to powder with my fingers but there remains enough large pieces that will impact the consistency of taste n the food.

With your fingers? OMG I hope you sterilise them first!!

I'm sure many remember open sugar bowls in cafes. I remember my mother once saying she was horrified to see a mother with a crying baby take the baby's dummy and plunge it in the cafe's sugar bowl before sticking it back in her kid's mouth. Yecch!

As I posted earlier, these were supposed to be replaced each amd every time.

That is the point really. Would anyone expect to enter their hotel room to find the bed made, but looking as though someone had been laying on top of it? It is more about poor presentation in an environment where the little things should matter.

I'm sure the chances of picking anything up from salt is next to zero but it is not a good look to sit down and be faced with a salt bowl that has clearly been used by the prior occupant. (That said it certainly didn't stop me!!! :p)

I still have nightmares thinking about the last time I had a dose of salts ;)
