Re: FIFO Flights from Port Hedland to Eastern States in one day? Missing the Red eye.

Would this work? Perhaps cutting it too fine in Melbourne.

QF 1111 arrive PER 11:10
QF 476 arrive MEL 19:10
Skybus to Southern Cross 19:20 arrive 19:45
Countrylink to Wagga Wagga 19:55 arrive 00:31

Hi SFSC,

Had successful FIFO flights/journeys home going via Melbourne, with Virgin Airlines, in Daylight saving for 2010/11 and missed the train once due to timetable changes and late flight, all due to wet weather and forced track work and cyclone in the west so thanks again for bringing the train journey to light.

Have been doing some research and the flight timetables have changed for 2011/12 Daylight saving, meaning the red eye flight would be the only option as the flights don't get into Melbourne until 19.20 pm and it is cutting it too fine with the travel in to Southern Cross.

I found another journey and I might have a go. Not too keen on Jetstar but it beats the Red eye and it cuts a little fine at Melbourne but it may just work.

November 2011

Virgin DJ 1840 8.35am Port Hedland to 10.35 am Perth
Jetstar JQ969 11.25am Perth to 17.55 pm Melbourne
Rex ZL 3286 18.35pm Melbourne to 19.45pm Wagga

Always open to ideas of travel from the Western State(Port Hedland) to the Eastern States (Wagga Wagga) in one day during Daylight saving?...Tis easy when daylight saving is over as flights connect with room to spare!

With a bit of luck timetables may change but not likely.

Cheers

Wonder what fare you would use on Rex? Rex Flex over Rex Biz would probably be a waste of money because most delays would be known to you before you board your JQ flight in Perth.

Or would you just grit your teeth, book Rex Net and hope you didn't end up on the train? Perhaps Flight Stats could help with that decision but at 41% of the Rex Biz fare, you could probably wear the risk.

What do others think?

Rex net and risk it or just the XPT...reassessing the time limit as it is possibly too fine...

Takes 10 mins to get from Terminal 1 to Terminal 3 at Melbourne Airport and need to check in 30 mins in advance with Rex and the Flight Stats for last month gives the Jetstar Flight an average of 22 mins late so XPT will still be the most reliable option from October to March...

Unfortunately it will still be Planes, Trains, Automobiles, and Buses to make it home in one day!

With ~ 2 hours plane to XPT a 500 metre walk past T4 could get the blood moving again if you don't have much luggage. Then 901 bus to Broadmeadows and train to Southern Cross. A much cheaper transfer option.

Happy to pay $16 for the Shuttle bus on a direct stop at Southern Cross...won't go the Taxi due to extra time to get there...thanks, it's good to keep finding new ways as that worked finding the XPT train option for sure

For me, I mainly would have been going the other way for exercise and possibly to minimise time spent waiting around at SC (almost like entertainment). Certainly, $16 isn't all that much more than a zone 2 fare and you won't need to have a Metcard or Myki.

Metcard's are easy enough to get, and a full fare Zone 1 and 2 card is $6. That's less than half the skybus cost. Having said that, I take the Skybus when I am going to the airport.

OT, but the $3 weekend/pub. hol. Zone 1 and 2 MyKi day rate is pretty good.

Ash Cloud looming near Perth yesterday meant our QF802 was late...was last flight out and made it by 2 mins... 12.58 pm departure time and all flights after 1pm were cancelled...

So missed the Rex Net flight...Rang Rex and they were great and put the flight in credit even though it was the cheaper flight. (Missed the flight once before too due to fog but had to claim on insurance that time)

Good old XPT Back up is still serving me well!

Cheers
