without doubt its the Perth residents who get the best 'value' out of this card.

It is definitely a return flight though, right? e.g. PER-SYD-PER :shock:

It is return, but where you can go is determined by the origin of the flight. So if your flights orginate in Perth, you can do PER-SYD-PER, but if you originate in SYD, you cannot do SYD-PER-SYD

Yep, that's right :cool:

What's the bet that AMEX are happy to offer PER based residents a lower rating card now, rather than this one.... when you apply? :rolleyes:

Not upgradeable. Believe it is O class, but could be N.

It has been mentioned that you may be able to copay when booking into a higher class, thus being able to book into an upgradeable fare class.

I have paid for a class upgrade before :)

I've redeemed a few (3) of these, and each time FF points were credited.

That said, for the last redemption, I was able to book into a different class simply by paying the fare difference between O and Q (no rebooking fee), so that might have been why FF points were awarded - maybe QANTAS thought it was a regular Q fare.

Even on an amex booked non upgraded flight i have received QFF points, i have never not received QFF points when using a free flight.

Don't give them any ideas :cool:. In any case, given the number of these flights they 'giveaway', I am sure they are getting them at some sort of discount - not that anything I saw was giving away the price! And to get that discount, Qantas would probably expect a certain number of flights to be bought, which requires a certain number of cards to be out and about. So hopefully, they will do what they can to maintain the number of cards on offer they will probably have contracted to.

I was quick to take up this offer when the Platinum Credit Card was first released FOC to Plat Charge Card members. I booked as soon as eligible (after first month's statement) and I recall being able to look up the pricing in Qantas' "Manage your booking" after adding in my frequent flyer number. The price displayed (fare component) was exactly 10% below the O class fare component (ie. excluding taxes). The next time I booked (a year later) I noticed that the ability to look up the price was removed.

OK - if this books into O class - what availability do I need to check for to book this?

EDIT

I am thinking:

QF () 842 0 SYD
06/12/08 10:45 AM DRW
06/12/08 1:45 PM 73H
Su,T,Th,Sa
85% / 12m J9 D6 Y9 B9 H9 K9 M9 L9 V9 S9 N9 Q9 O9

Coming back on

QF () 843 0 DRW
06/12/08 2:30 PM SYD
06/12/08 8:20 PM 73H
Su,T,Th,Sa
81% / 16m J9 D7 Y9 B9 H9 K9 M9 L9 V9 S9 N9 Q9 O9

I would then look at how I could upgrade that to J...

Cannot use points to upgrade O class.

One way to virtually guarantee an upgrade is to find an appropriate flight with Business class award availability; call Amex and have them book your flight in an upgradeable class (S or better) - you will need to pay the fare difference (e.g. between O and S class - SYD-DRW ($279 to $391 or $112). Once booked you then call Qantas and upgrade into that available award business class seat.

OK thanks.

Just checking for the required date I see this in the source:

var theRecommandation = new Recommandation(1, 279.0);

theRecommandation.addClasse('O');

and

var theRecommandation = new Recommandation(7, 391.0);

theRecommandation.addClasse('S');

So I am guessing the ballpark fare difference between O and S is $112.

There are no award seats available on those flights so it might be an uncomfortable 9 hours in whY...

EDIT 2

Just realised that S class earns only 0.5 qpoints - I will therefore need to pay to upgrade to H.

The other thing to keep in mind is you can only originate from Darwin for the DRW-SYD return flights, starting in SYD isn't permitted (nice of them, eh? :mrgreen:).

Rather than start a new thread....

Does anyone know if you can book two one-way fares with the AMEX free flight?

We are heading to QLD for Christmas. The plan was to all drive up, but Mrs Shano is having second thoughts about spending 20 hours in the car with Mini Shano #1 and #2 and is considering flying up with the two of them. They would only need two seats as the youngest mini-Shano will only be 3 months old. I would then get the opportunity to drive up in peace and with my choice of music the whole way.... :D

We plan to have a more leisurely drive back to Melbourne after Christmas so no need for return flights this time.

I'd suggest a quick call to the Plat line would give you a nice quick answer.. that being said, I do believe a few people around here have been able to book as 2 1 ways, not sure if they've been able to do it for more than just the card holder though.

The PDS .pdf indicates return basis:
page 35 said:
...
  • Flight means a Qantas domestic Economy non-stop return flight provided on these Conditions. ...
... Each Flight must be a non-stop Economy return flight between a Departure City and one of its corresponding Arrival Cities in the table on Page 34. ...

Hi all,

My Wife changed her ticket as she needed to come home early when we were in Brisbane 2 months ago. She then found out she could stay on as originally planned, but we missed the deadline to change the ticket back to the original return date. As a consequence, we had to forfeit that ticket.

I called up Amex and used our free ticket, but apparently there were no more seats in that class on the flight we needed on that day. We had to pay close to $200 and she was then able to get onto the flight. I explained that it was only for one way and the lady on the phone said it was a return ticket. To get around this, we didnt nominate a return date and just used it for one way.

Questions;
1. Are we able to use the return segment when we go back to Brisbane (Gold Coast) in February?
2. To this day, still cannot understand why I had to pay $200 on what is supposed to be a 'free flight'? Is this because I had to get a different ticket type which was in turn, a more expensive, flexible ticket type?

I am not sure about the 2 one way tickets rather than the 1 return ticket... but you have nothing to lose by asking :)

That's because the free flight is O, and depending on the time booked (e.g. if there was a sale on) the next available fare class can be quite a bit more... and keeping in mind it is for each way too.

Cheers,
Dan.
