Hi all
I am considering my switch to the Plat Charge card with Free Plat Credit Card. One of the determining factors (justifications being provided to the approving committee) is the free flight.
Can anone advise what fare class this flight books into? I would like to fly up to BNE to meet my Parents when they arrive in Oz and then fly with them down to SYD on particular flights before Christmas. Just wondering if I can check availability and also whether it is points upgradeable to J - otherwise my cold dead a$$ will be in whY (to reference a recent post in another thread).
Cheers

Not upgradeable. Believe it is O class, but could be N.

It has been mentioned that you may be able to copay when booking into a higher class, thus being able to book into an upgradeable fare class.

It is 'O'.

Thank - looks like it's the back of the us for me... mind you I might be a QF WP by then so they might bend the rules ;)

And it is upgradeable - I have done that. You just need to pay a fee to change the class to one that can be upgraded to U class (if using points) or else change the class all the way to J class if you want to pay for J. When I did it last year the fee was $65.

Only a very remote chance of that happing - although I have seen a post where such reportedly did happen with an ODU sumising the QP Agent made a mistake.

Does not earn FF points/SC either.

In May last year I took the free flight from Sydney to Perth, and I was one of the lucky ones who applied for the Plat credit card before they changed the rules so got the flight this time only. Anyway, a couple of weeks later I was checking my activity statement on QF site and noticed I received status credits for the flight (20 I think). I can't go back to May 07 on the site, but I think I also received base points for the flight.

I did receive miles and status credits for my free flights a couple of months ago.

Consider it a bonus if you happen to get them The T&C's say you don't

I've redeemed a few (3) of these, and each time FF points were credited.

That said, for the last redemption, I was able to book into a different class simply by paying the fare difference between O and Q (no rebooking fee), so that might have been why FF points were awarded - maybe QANTAS thought it was a regular Q fare.

I had previously thought the Amex Free flight was for any red e-deal availabile flight (ie booking class N,O)

Was inquiring about a booked SYD-MEL and return on 9/10 Aug.

Appears that only the cheapest Red-e-deal flights (ie ~$105 are available) based on the availability I was told.
On the return this meant a 10.30am flight was the latest available.

For a $60 upgrade fee, I could catch a 1.00pm flight (the last available at the more expensive red-e-deal rate ie ~$163)

No offer was made for upgrade into higher classes.

The Amex flights are booked into "O" class, and when I booked my last flight I needed to change dates, contacted Amex who had ample 'O' availability on the flights I wanted and she didn't charge me the change fee which I thought was quite nice. ;)

It's funny that it's worse to redeem the free flights when there's a sale on, as the upgrade cost increases. If you wait until the current sale's over then the base fare would be $138 instead of $105, so you only pay $25 more rather than $58 more for the next fare class up (fortunately my recent redemption came at a non-sale time :D).

Good call. That was one of the things I was vigilant of since the difference between MEL-BNE return normal and sale fare is over $100! Saved me a bit on the upgrade to Super Saver fare.

Definitely worth while paying attention to for all us Amex NOQ upgraders!
