Over the years I have had many and varied responses from QF regarding OW redemption trip itin. as to why they do not comply, things like, you cant leave your country of residence twice, you have to travel in one direction, but the best was yesterday and I had an itinerary that I needed to check the QF distance calculator and there was a difference of over 1,600 and the QF response was that OW does not fly between Rome & Istanbul and therefore the distance has to be calculated where we fly, calculator had to calculate FCO-LHR-IST.

Could not convince him even though the rules state otherwise?, just said thank you and I will replan

Is that a surface segment FCO-IST or actually flying FCO-LHR-IST?

If the latter then the calculation is correct to include total distance.

I was flying LHR-FCO then cruise to IST and keep flying towards Aus.

OW can route you from FCO to IST via MUC which is 1031 miles shorter than going via LHR so can you shave 600 miles from your trip elsewhere?

Hmmm. The surface sector should be point to point not where Oneworld flies.

Need to look at terms and conditions closely but that would be disappointing if the award booking engine has another bug in it.

Rule 14.5.5 applies here "Surface segments are permitted as part,,,,, but the distance between the disembarkation point and the next embarkation point will be included in the calculation for that itinerary"

Separate rule also states that (may be unpublished?) BOTH cities between a surface sector count as ONE stopover IN TOTAL, so therefore you could have a long trip with FOUR different surface sectors and ONE separate STOPOVER and still be a "VALID TICKET" ( subject to other normal rules.

Does FCO-IST some how count as changing continent? I thought that surface segments can only be intra-continent.

I understand some of the Explorer fares have rules about inter continent etc but not OW classic redemption, a surface sector is a surface sector wherever it is, also the thing about taking the OW route to get there for a surface sector or to get back to your origination point from the end point is calculated as point to point, not where OW flies,
eg DPS-CMB-HKG-LAX-BNE-HKG-AKL-MEL-PER-BME-DPS is "valid at 34,732 as per GCM but the trip ends in BME and it is just a calculation STRAIGHT back to DPS, but if you were calculating the OW flight distance to DPS it would be PER-KUL_DPS and would make the total distance 38,762.

I agree about the point to point surface sector. I was just wondering as per my question.

Broome to Bali is a good example of an "inter country" calculation of a distance that is not flown, although not sure if it is counted as a surface sector or just a calculated distance to arrive at a total distance, don't suppose it really matters either way.

I don't believe there's any restriction with respect to changing continent for a QF oneworld five stop award. Regardless, FCO and IST are the same continent (Europe) for the purposes of a oneworld Explorer paid ticket.
