I have just visited the Travelex website and noticed that the rate for the AUD against the USD is 0.7627USD/AUD. This is about the highest the rate has been in the past two months. I bought some USD in early September form Travelex online at 0.7596 USD/AUD. The online rates are much better than the OTC rates. If you are travelling to the LOTFAP in the near future and want to buy some cash, it's worth monitoring the rate, especially in the light of the forthcoming Reserve Bank Board meeting on Nov 7th and interest rate announcement on Nov 8th. If our rates rise (other things being equal) the AUD should rise against the USD. If you are ordering money online with Travelex, there is a maximum 28 day window to complete the contract and a minimum 2 day window before collection can take place.

There is a much better way of knowing the right time to buy US dollars.About 2 weeks before drron leaves for the US the aussie dollar falls. When his last credit card purchase in the US posts the aussie dollar rises.
Now if you think I am going to give you the next dates for free think again!

Sort of like my trip to HKG three weeks ago; being tied at a notional 7.8 HKD to 1USD I would have been about AUD90 better off on todays rates.:(

Sorry you are using anecdotal evidence to ignore the Altair factor. It is a known fact that whenever I need a foreign exchange that the rates begin to go up when I think about it but at time of purchase (goods, travellers cheques or cash) the rates post a significant downfall. I can not go to Asia due to the fact that several countries are after me fall the last currency crisis! ;)

I feel privileged to be in a forum with such big hitters in the forex market. And all the time, I thought exchange rates were a factore of macro supply and demand for currencies and interest rate differentials. I did not know before of the drron principle, the serfty factor and the Altair Axiom all fueled by credit card purchases or such psychological factors as thinking about spending in a foreign currency. Wow:!:

Did I mention my Mid March and Mid June travels this year? (I've already referred to my Late October journey ...) :-|

bah I don't know what you are complaining about when AUD only moves a couple of cents or so

the kiwi peso is far more volatile, 10c movement in a few months is not unusual

It might be a good to idea to post your travel plans for next year. :p

Both my trips were a month after your March and June trips and the exchange rate is only marginally better then. I had a look at the Forex website comparing the AUD/THB and both my trips coincided with the trough in the exchange rates.

interbank rate is 0.67 - this year has varied between 0.59 and 0.70, since 2002 has varied between 0.41 and 0.75

I bought $5K of AUD a the rate of 80-81 cents to $1 NZD in August to pay for my credit card purchases in NZ. My purchases are now at 85-86 cents to $1 NZD.:(
Well my NZ credit card becomes value earning again in December so please organise your FX deals appropriately.
