I surmise that due to heavy rain or similar in SYD, EY454 (due into SYD at 1850, operated by B773 A6-ETO appears to have been in a holding pattern over Crookwell and to the east of Booroowa, NSW (near Goulburn NSW) and has now deviated to MEL where at 1950 it is about to land. The aircraft had departed AUH 53 minutes late at 2253 on Sunday 12 October 2014 and so if I am correct will now be at least three hours late into SYD.

One wonders if tonight's return departure (EY455 at 2150) will depart SYD prior to the 2300 hours curfew.

No doubt jb747 or others will be able to fill us in, but lack of extra fuel (comparatively speaking) must be a deciding factor in a captain deciding to divert to an alternative airport in such conditions, particularly if it looks like continuing for a while.

2030 UPDATE: EY454 is now shown on the airline's website as due to arrive SYD at 2235, so I would have thought that one could pretty much safely suggest that those booked on EY454 will have a pleasant night providing the airline can find them room at the inn. However this is contradicted by the website that shows departure from SYD to AUH at 0005 on Tuesday 14 October so perhaps 'the delegate' has been busily approving a dispensation (assuming that the three required criteria have been fulfilled).

2140 UPDATE; EY454 is on its way from MEL to SYD as EY454D. It should be in the Harbour City at about 2210.

EY460, the daily 2145 hours from AUH to MEL is frequently late, and not just 16 or 20 minutes behind time. One assumes that this is often due to the crowded Middle East airspace to which QF pilot jb747 sometimes refers, although he flies in and out of DXB. FlightStats suggests that it is in the worst fifth of flights for delays.

Tonight EY460 (which is timetabled into MEL at 1720 at this time of year) is about to arrive at roughly 1935. It is Boeing 773ER A6-ETO.

EY454 (operated by A380 A6-APA) is timetabled to depart AUH at 2200 hours but on Wednesday 16 September took off at 2313. Nonetheless it is about to land in SYD at 1822, so it will only be about 35 minutes late compared with the gate arrival time of 1755 hours. As noted above, its MEL-bound colleague, EY460 does not have a great punctuality record either. Since 1 August (to use a much overhyped term) EY has been operating 'double daillies' to and from MEL.

EY455 SYD-AUH delayed by about 11 hours last night / this morning. Finally got away at a bit after 8am this (Friday) morning. Scheduled to arrive AUH abt 3:30pm local according to Flight Aware, giving it about 7+ hours to turn around for the next EY454.

In the SYD EY lounge and asked about the reason for the major delay in EY 455 the other day . "None if the business class seats were working ". I guess that's a central electrical thing, not mechanical and yes, I think worth delaying the flight over!

The 1525 hours departing EY451 did not take off until 1612 on Friday 6 November. FR24 claims that it will lose further time to AUH, arriving at 0043 on Saturday 7 November instead of 2305 hours tonight. B773ER A6_ETL is the operating aircraft.

EY454 took off on Thursday 12 November from AUH at 2317, 72 minutes after its 2205 off blocks time but has made up significant time and is about to arrive in SYD at 1946, just 31 minutes behind time. A380 A6-APC is the operating aircraft.

EY460 on Tuesday 24 November 2015 was meant to depart at 2200 but did not take off from AUH until 2317. It is not far from destination MEL where it should be at the gate at 1929 hours on Wednesday 25 November, 59 minutes late.

The Sunday 29 November 1800 hours arrival in BNE ex AUH, EY484, was looking 'uneventful' but unfortunately storm cells over BNE (and OOL) put paid to that. As at 1825 Queensland time it has not long emerged from a holding pattern with B789 A6_BLA operating the flight and touchdown in about 15 minutes at 1842.

EY455 (A380 A6-APB) took off from SYD at 2256 tonight compared to its 2150 off blocks time, narrowly missing imposition of the 2300 hours curfew on its trip to AUH.

EY463 from MEL to AUH on Friday 11 December 2015 was timetabled to depart at 1555 hours but did not take off until 1809 tonight, so arrival on Saturday will be at a forecast 0058 instead of 2305 tonight. Aircraft is B773ER A6-ETL. Running two hours late may mean lost connections for passengers bound for European destinations.

In these circumstances I often wonder how airlines determine if any flights are to be held and if so for what maximum period. Logically, if 20 passengers are connecting and a plane only has to sit at a gate for another 15 minutes, one might assume it is worth an airline's while to hold it, but if there are only two connecting and the plane would have to be held back for another 20 minutes, 'forget it' might be the refrain.

However at least one AFFer reported a case where numerous connecting passengers were forced to wait a long time for the next flight because the designated connection was not held for a relatively short time. It was not EY, but I cannot recall which airline this was about.

EY454, the 2205 hours from AUH on Friday 18 December did not take off until 2342 so it is running late, with SYD arrival expected this evening (Saturday 19) at 2001 instead of 1915 hours with A360 A6-APE the conveyance.

EY460, the Christmas Day 2205 AUH - MEL flight took off at 2325 and is running about 55 minutes late for a 1925 hours arrival this evening. From 1 June 2016, this flight becomes an Airbus A380 with its overhyped 'The Residence.'

Is the latter is ever booked by actors or actresses, socialist Presidents and other such 'luminaries' who screech at us all to 'reduce our carbon emissions?'

EY460 is again late, this time on New Year's Eve 2015 with B773ER A6-ETO about to arrive in MEL at about 1907 hours, 37 minutes late after taking off last night from AUH 70 minutes after its departure time.

EY450 ex AUH into SYD on Monday 4 January (B773ER A6-ETK) is about to land and should be at the terminal about an hour late at just before 0835.

On Thursday 7 January, EY454 is about to arrive in SYD (A380 A6-APA) at about 2055 hours, an hour and 40 minutes late.

The 2150 hours return flight to AUH, EY455, should be able to depart before SYD's 2300 hours curfew, perhaps 'beating' it by 25 minutes or so if all goes well.

The arrival in MEL of EY460 (B773ER A6-ETK) ex AUH has been delayed due to the rain and winds around MEL with the flight expected to arrive at the gate at about 1915 hours, 45 minutes late as it is a holding pattern due to a queue of others such as QF451, QF453 and QF455 similarly delayed.

EY460, the 2205 hours Tuesday 16 February flight ex AUH to MEL did not take off until 2319 and hence on Wednesday 17 should arrive at 1920 instead of 1830 hours. Plane is B773ER A6-ETK.

The AUH - MEL EY460 (B773ER A6-ETO) took off on Wednesday 24 February at 0041, significantly later than its late evening scheduled departure on Tuesday at 2205. It should be at its Australian destination's gate at about 2008 tonight, an hour and 38 minutes late.

EY454 into SYD on Tuesday 8 March is about 35 minutes late, arriving at roughly 1950 hours. Aircraft is A380 A6-APB. It had not taken off until 70 minutes past its scheduled departure of 2205 at AUH on Monday 7 March.

EY460 ex AUH into MEL is running 45 minutes late and should be at the terminal at roughly 1915 hours. Craft is B773ER A6-ETM.
