Employer Perks you wish you got

I remember a perk which I thought was extremely cool at the time. My first boss was a judge and I thought I had it made, as a very junior Judge's Associate, when we were shuffled into the Ansett and TAA duty manager's office for drinks and nibbles prior to flights out of SYD and MEL. The flights were always first class of course. We would sit beside his desk and watch the hoi polloi walking to their flights. This was before most of you were born and before FF was even imagined.

Fascinating! What do you do now? I was also a judge's associate. It was nice to travel in J when flying with the judge, access the Chairmen's Lounge, government car to and from the airport, etc.

This was a very long time ago. I was associate to a Conciliation and Arbitration Commission judge for about 18 months straight after I graduated. I was also doing a post grad degree part time. Certainly it was great exposure for me who had a strong interest in industrial relations and involved lots of travel all over Australia. The perks were the judge's but I got to tag along!

Im lucky to say that im still on the same travelling "system" for the past thirty years; accruing all type of points, anything over 3 hours J etc, etc. When you are in demand you can still negotiate! (so hopefully it doesnt change with age!)

And a company car never worried me, have never driven a vehicle of any sort!!!!

Chauffeurs can be so useful.....

In this day and age being the savvy bunch we all are  we can create our own perks which in some cases can be far better than the traditional variety we may have enjoyed in a bygone era eg one RDO a month etc.

An Flounge run here 'n' there, advice about how to snag the best seats on a flight eg at T-80, JQ price matches with TT, avoiding CC fees on JQ, nesting fares, US DM or AV LM - you get the picture.

I would hate to attempt to explain the purchase of US DM on an expense report.

Not quite travel related but I get paid to ride brand new BMW motorbikes at Phillip Island and Eastern Creek :)

Long ago was offered at least 2 int. travel flights per year in J, a new exec car, plus huge salary, no contract in place, received the latter only, left after 18 months, commenced own business, lost count of OS J trips since.

My dream job would be to be a 'secret shopper' for a prestige international hotel chain. They would fly me business (I'm not greedy) all over the world as often as I liked, free accommodation and snooping to review the standards of each hotel.

Of course I'd get to keep the FF points and then would recruit some of the AFF brains on this forum to work out all the perks - they would be handsomely remunerated by sharing enough of the points to make it worth their while. I imagine there'd be a queue of volunteers

As a business owner, have had the WBC black with double promo for 2 and half months, have accrued around 1.8mil KF points

Tea "lady". Saw this once when visiting a WA government workplace.

From my recollections of tea ladies in the Australian Public Service (Last day of service where I work was 30 Sept 1987) they were hardly a "perk"
5c a cup for some brown liquid made from "Caterers Blend" and call it either tea or coffee as you wish it might have some resemblance of taste.

The Public Service is certainly a difficult area to find any travel perks in. Virgin's private B class fare with lounge access and top tier SC is the only one I can think of if you happen to actually fly from an airport with a Virgin Lounge.

Just a question (not being rude or anything) but how have you managed to get by for so long working in Australia and never driving a car? The only person I know over the age of 25 who has never driven is my mother-in-law and she totally depends on my father-in-law to go anywhere that's not on a railway line. Work has so many more demands so I was just wondering how you manage it. Fascinated.

While i am not the person in question. I haven't had a car in the last 5 years (although do have a drivers licence) living basically in the Sydney CBD i walk or ride my bike anywhere i need to go. The large groceries are delivered (free delivery on wednesdays with coles online). The rest are just picked up ad hoc as needed. The internet and delivery makes things easy. The few times i have needed to pick things up i just get cabs, probably still works out cheaper than the insurance on a car :) The only times i have thought about buying a car would be this week when its rained most days!

There are times when I'd really like to do that! Especially with the cost of running a car. Around Sydney I could probably get away with it but interstate I always need to get to slightly remote locations so need to drive. Taxis aren't going to wait around out there...

I also love to "go bush" so not having a vehicle is not an option there. Still maybe I could just hire a 4WD a few times a year. Would end up ahead I reckon!

(Sorry about the OT tangent).
